Thijs De Ridder Just Raised Virginias Ceiling Even Higher

Virginia's Thijs De Ridder gains national recognition with a spot on the prestigious NABC Division I Player of the Year Watch List, a testament to his standout performance last season and potential for the upcoming year.

Virginia’s Thijs De Ridder has landed on another prominent preseason list, earning a spot on the 2027 National Association of Basketball Coaches Division I Player of the Year Preseason Watch List.

The NABC announced Thursday, Oct. 29, that De Ridder was among 20 players selected. Last season, he put together an All-ACC first-team campaign while leading Virginia in scoring at 15.6 points per game and rebounding at 6.2 per game.

De Ridder also picked up preseason ACC Player of the Year recognition for 2026-27, becoming the lone Cavalier to join Malcolm Brogdon in earning that honor. Brogdon was named co-Player of the Year before the 2015-16 season.

The NABC Division I Player of the Year is chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I head coaches after the regular season and will be revealed during the week of the 2027 Men’s Final Four. Former Duke standout Cameron Boozer won the award last season.

The award has been handed out every year since 1974-75 and remains the only national player of the year honor selected by the sport’s head coaches.

Virginias Upset Hopes Just Got Tougher Ahead Of Wake Forest

Virginia heads into its road matchup with No. 14 Wake Forest carrying a thinner margin for error than it would like, and the injury picture only adds to the challenge. Wide receiver Jekail Middlebrook is among the unavailable pieces, leaving Tony Elliott to navigate a difficult week as his offense tries to keep pace against a ranked opponent in a tough environment.

Elliott praised Wake Forests performance during his midweek press conference, but he also voiced confidence in the work his own team has put in. Still, the opening availability report is a reminder that Virginia may have to adjust on the fly, with multiple wide receiver injuries clouding the setup ahead of a game already stacked against the Cavaliers. Virginia Faces A Make-Or-Break Test With One Huge Offensive Decision

Virginia heads into a tricky matchup with No. 14 Wake Forest sitting at 4-4, and the offense is clearly searching for a better rhythm at exactly the wrong time to be searching. Des Kitchings said the Cavaliers are looking to lean more on heavier personnel, with extra tight ends helping both the ground game and the play-action package as Virginia tries to find a more stable identity.

The quarterback picture is just as important, because Tony Elliott is still sticking with Pribula despite the recent struggles that have made every series feel more consequential. Eli Holstein remains there as an alternative if the Cavaliers decide they need a different look, but for now Virginia is trying to pair a more physical approach up front with the same starter under center against one of the tougher opponents on the schedule. Virginia Offense Faces A Brutal Test Ahead Of Wake Forest

Virginias offense could be working around some familiar absences when it heads into Saturdays game against Wake Forest. Jekail Middlebrook and Kam Courtney are both listed as doubtful, a notable development for a unit that has already had to lean on different pieces as it tries to find rhythm against conference competition.

Middlebrooks status stands out after he ran for 117 yards against Duke, and Courtneys uncertainty leaves another potential hole in the passing game. Virginia is also watching three defensive backs on the injury report, while Wake Forest has only one player listed as questionable and several more tagged probable or out, adding another layer to an already tricky matchup.
