College football’s 2026 season opens Saturday with a Week 0 slate that feels loaded for this stage of the calendar. Eight games are on tap, 16 FBS teams are involved, and the day stretches from Ireland to the late-night window with a mix of debut moments, early conference weight and a Group of Six showdown that could matter down the road.
The first game of the season belongs to Bill Belichick and North Carolina, and the spotlight will be intense from the jump. The Tar Heels meet TCU in Ireland in the only noon-window game, giving the matchup a standalone feel.
UNC was 4-8 last season and had little to celebrate, so the bar in Year 2 is simple: show real progress. The Tar Heels are trying to avoid another year of being a punchline, and that starts with being competitive against a TCU team that beat them 48-14 in last season’s opener.
TCU has its own quarterback reset after Josh Hoover left for Indiana, but the Horned Frogs bring in Jaden Craig from Harvard, a transfer who has already created some buzz. Craig started 24 games at Harvard and became the program’s all-time leader in passing yards and touchdowns.
Last season, he threw for 2,869 yards and 25 scores. That makes him the latest test for a North Carolina defense trying to keep Sonny Dykes’ offense in check.
The Tar Heels also need answers on offense, because last season they were one of the worst units in college football. UNC recently named Billy Edwards Jr. as its starting quarterback.
Edwards missed almost all of last season at Wisconsin because of injury, but he does bring starting experience from his time at Maryland in 2024. For Belichick, the assignment is as much about tone as result: the Tar Heels need to look like a team moving forward.
Another game with real early-season weight comes in the ACC, where NC State and Virginia meet in a matchup that could shape the league race quickly. Both teams are projected to finish in the top half of the conference, and getting this one in Week 0 gives the winner an immediate advantage.
Virginia is coming off a 10-2 regular season and an ACC Championship Game appearance, a surprise run that has the program heading in the right direction under Tony Elliott. NC State, meanwhile, has been steady under Dave Doeren, usually landing in the seven-to-nine-win range, but the Wolfpack are still trying to break through.
A big part of that push rests with quarterback CJ Bailey, who is set to start for his third season and is viewed by many as a player who could take a significant step in 2026. If he does, NC State could have the piece it needs to make a real move.
The game also carries extra meaning because these teams met last year, but that matchup did not count as an ACC game even though both schools were in the league. This one does count, and the winner gets an early boost in the chase to challenge Miami, the clear favorite in the ACC.
The Group of Six spotlight is just as compelling, especially with Memphis and UNLV set to meet in what looks like the day’s best late game. The winner will be in strong position in the Group of Six College Football Playoff picture. Memphis is a particularly interesting team entering the season because first-year head coach Charles Huff has more than 50 new players coming in from the transfer portal, giving the Tigers a roster full of change and talent.
Hawaii also enters the weekend with a chance to make noise, and star quarterback Micah Alejado gives the Rainbow Warriors a real shot against Stanford, a power conference opponent. Then there’s North Dakota State, which will make its FBS debut against Jacksonville State. That’s no soft landing, either: Jacksonville State has won nine games in each of its past three seasons since moving up to the FBS.
