Former UVA Favorite Malachi Fields Is Giving Cavaliers Fans A Reason To Smile

Charlottesville's own Malachi Fields impresses in his NFL preseason debut, indicating a bright future with the New York Giants.

Malachi Fields made a strong first impression in his preseason debut, and it didn’t take long for the former UVA standout to flash the traits that made him such a productive target in Charlottesville.

The Charlottesville native and Monticello High School grad caught 3 passes for 34 yards and a touchdown against the Vikings on Saturday, looking every bit like a receiver ready to carve out a real role in the NFL. It was his first meaningful game action as a pro, and he made the most of it.

Fields, who transferred to Notre Dame for his final college season, was one of the most dependable players in Virginia’s offense during his time with the Cavaliers. He started all 12 games in 2024 and had already built a reputation as one of the program’s most effective wideouts over the previous three to four seasons. From 2023 on, he put together back-to-back seasons with at least 55 catches, 800 receiving yards and 5 touchdowns while operating as the “X” receiver for Tony Elliott and Co.

After a strong year at Notre Dame, Fields heard his name called in the third round of the 2026 NFL Draft by the New York Giants. Since then, he’s climbed quickly up the depth chart, and his preseason debut only helped his case.

His touchdown grab was the play that stood out most. On a broken-down play, Jaxson Dart scrambled and Fields reacted instantly, fading toward the back of the end zone to create a big target at 6'4", 210 lbs. He went up over a Minnesota defender and came down with the score, flashing the kind of ball skills and awareness that have always stood out in his game.

Fields also showed he can do more than win on the boundary. On one catch, he worked a comeback route and dragged defenders for an extra three to four yards to move the chains. On another, he settled into an in-breaker against off coverage and turned it into a seven-yard gain, adjusting nicely to a low, inside throw.

For a first NFL outing, it was about as clean as it gets. Fields looked comfortable, physical and polished, and while Malik Nabers, Darius Slayton and Calvin Austin are technically ahead of him on the Giants’ depth chart, he’s clearly pushing for more. His skill set could fit especially well on the boundary in Matt Nagy and Brian Callahan’s passing offense, and if Saturday was any indication, he won’t be waiting long to force the issue.

Virginia Faces A New Miami Problem In This ACC Showdown

For Virginia, the bigger concern is how the Hurricanes can now put more pressure on the backcourt and force tougher decisions possession by possession. The next meeting should also carry a new wrinkle in Coral Gables, where a first look at the matchup under Coach Jai Lucas adds another layer to a rivalry that already feels like it is moving into a new phase. Virginias Final Camp Week Could Decide Key Roles Vs NC State

The final week of preseason camp has become the most important stretch of Virginias summer, with Tony Elliott and his staff still sorting out who will fill the key jobs before the opener against N.C. State. Wide receiver, defensive line, linebacker and running back are all under the microscope, and the competition has only intensified as transfers settle in and players working back from injuries try to make one last push.

For the Cavaliers, the focus now is less on broad evaluation and more on narrowing the depth chart in time for game week. Several roles still look up for grabs, and the coming days should give the staff a clearer read on which players are ready to start, which ones can be trusted in the rotation, and which battles may carry right up to kickoff.
