In a significant move for Virginia Athletics, Clay Walker has been appointed as the General Manager of UVA NIL. This new division, part of the athletic department’s partnership with Playfly Sports and Virginia Sports Properties, is set to open up third-party NIL (Name, Image, Likeness) opportunities for University of Virginia student-athletes.
Walker brings a wealth of experience to UVA, having previously served as the general manager of ECU Sports Properties at East Carolina University. His impressive resume includes senior roles with USA TODAY Sports and the NFL Players Association (NFLPA). Notably, he was a key player in launching NFL PLAYERS INC, the pioneering commercial athlete marketing program in professional sports.
Tyler Jones, the Deputy Athletics Director and Chief Strategy Officer, emphasized the strategic importance of this appointment, stating, “The addition of Clay and UVA NIL is crucial for ensuring that UVA remains competitive in attracting top-tier talent across all sports.”
Walker’s track record speaks volumes. While with the NFLPA, he brokered the groundbreaking licensing deal with the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC) that allowed player names on college football jerseys for stars like Peyton Manning, Deion Sanders, and Barry Sanders. He also played a pivotal role in bringing NFL players into the Madden NFL video game and was instrumental in licensing and commercializing fantasy sports as the Chairman of the Fantasy Sports Association.
