Jon Gruden isn’t picking the Raiders to rise in 2026. He’s backing the Denver Broncos to take the AFC West instead.
On Tuesday’s edition of Wake Up Barstool, the former Las Vegas head coach was asked to call the division winner ahead of the season, and he went straight to Denver.
"I'm going to pick Denver, just because of continuity: head coach, quarterback," Gruden said. "Almost all their starters are back, and they're going to get a jolt from Waddle. I like the Broncos to win it.
"I like the Chargers in second and I like the Chiefs to finish third, but I think all three of those teams can be playoff teams and I think the Raiders are going to improve. But unfortunately for the Silver and Black, this is a very tough division with some established coaches and quarterback."
Gruden’s choice comes with Denver positioned as the division’s front-runner. The Broncos are valued at $6.8 billion by Forbes and rolled to a 14-win season in 2025. Their defense has been built around an elite pass rush that has piled up 131 sacks over the last two seasons.
The Chargers sit close behind. Under Jim Harbaugh, they’ve put together back-to-back 11-6 seasons, but the offense still needs more firepower if they’re going to make a deeper playoff push.
The Chiefs, meanwhile, have slipped to third after a six-win season last year. They’re leaning heavily on Patrick Mahomes, who is expected to return ahead of schedule from a torn ACL and LCL to help steady things.
As for the Raiders, Gruden still sees some improvement coming, but not enough to lift them out of the basement right away. Drafting Fernando Mendoza first overall and adding veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins should help, but the team is also adjusting to a new coaching staff under Klint Kubiak and still has a wide receivers room with much to desire.
Gruden’s comments arrive as his legal fight with the NFL hit another turn this week. The league failed to force the matter into arbitration, and Gruden continues to argue that the NFL ran a "malicious and orchestrated campaign" to ruin his career.
That lawsuit traces back to the leak of emails from his time at ESPN, including racist, misogynistic, and homophobic remarks. The emails were uncovered during an investigation into the Washington franchise and ultimately led to Gruden’s resignation from the Raiders.
