The Golden Knights found their groove Sunday night, delivering a much-needed 3-2 victory over the Stars at the American Airlines Center. This road win snapped their recent skid and showcased one of their sharpest performances of the season.
Brayden McNabb kicked things off with an early goal, Ivan Barbashev leveled the score in the second, and Reilly Smith sealed the deal late in the third. The Knights played with playoff intensity, especially impressive on the second night of a back-to-back.
The shot disparity was telling: Vegas outshot Dallas 33-15, clamping down on the Stars to just nine shots over the final two periods.
McNabb Sets the Tone
Vegas came out swinging, with McNabb leading the charge. He scored just over four minutes into the first period, capping off a coast-to-coast effort that started with Keegan Kolesar and Shea Theodore. This early strike gave the Knights a 1-0 lead and a boost against a Dallas team that had been a thorn in their side.
“I’ve been getting a lot of chances, so it’s nice to see one finally go in,” McNabb shared. “Shooting the puck quite a bit, so good to get rewarded.”
Dallas responded with a power-play goal from Wyatt Johnston and took a 2-1 lead with Justin Hryckowian’s rebound finish. Despite this, Vegas maintained control, finishing the first period with a slight edge in shots and setting the stage for a dominant performance.
Head coach Bruce Cassidy noted, “I thought, like the first period yesterday, it was one of our better periods in terms of possession and territorially being the better team.”
Second Unit Steps Up
The Knights’ equalizer came courtesy of their power play. After Dallas took penalties for delay of game and slashing, Barbashev tied it up at 2-2.
Brett Howden set up the play from behind the goal line, finding Barbashev who calmly netted the puck. Colton Sissons added the assist.
“They made that low-seam play that the other group hasn’t been able to make lately,” Cassidy remarked. “So good for them. They’re keeping it simple, trying to play close to the net.”
Barbashev noted the playoff-like atmosphere, saying, “I think we controlled the game for the most part. Probably one of the better games all season long.”
The Knights’ penalty kill was crucial, especially when Jack Eichel took a double minor for high-sticking. Vegas successfully killed off the four-minute penalty, preventing Dallas from regaining momentum.
“Today we dug in, got it done,” Cassidy said, highlighting the importance of that stretch.
Hill Stands Tall
Dallas pushed hard in the third, but Adin Hill was up to the task. Despite the Stars’ pressure, Hill’s timely saves kept the Knights steady, allowing them to regain control.
“There was a little adversity, we pushed through it, playoff atmosphere,” Cassidy explained.
McNabb echoed this sentiment, “They had a push in the third. We bent but didn’t break.”
Hill’s 13 saves were pivotal, with McNabb praising his performance, “He was great tonight. A couple big saves in the third.”
Vegas tightened defensively, allowing just three shots in the second and six in the third, showcasing their ability to control the game after falling behind.
Smith Delivers the Winner
With just over three minutes left, Mitch Marner battled to keep the play alive, and the puck found its way to Smith, who fired it home for the 3-2 lead. Pavel Dorofeyev assisted on the play, and Smith’s goal was a significant moment in his season.
“It’s awesome to see,” McNabb said. “Such a good teammate. Came in, was ready, was prepared like we knew he would be, and he had a big game for us.”
The Knights managed Dallas’ late 6-on-5 push, keeping the Stars at bay and securing the win.
“We kept them to the outside,” Cassidy noted, pleased with his team’s defensive effort.
This victory was more than just a win; it was a statement. The Knights dominated the shot count, executed a crucial penalty kill, and finally saw their efforts pay off.
