Golden Knights McPhee Earns Major Career Honor

Honoring decades of dedication to hockey, George McPhee of the Vegas Golden Knights receives the prestigious Lou Lamoriello Award for his impactful career both on and off the ice.

Every year, the American Hockey Coaches Association honors a standout former college coach or player with the prestigious Lou Lamoriello Award, celebrating those who have excelled in their careers post-college. This time, the accolade goes to George McPhee, the President of Hockey Operations for the Vegas Golden Knights.

As the Frozen Four gears up to hit Vegas, McPhee expressed his deep gratitude: “Receiving the Lou Lamoriello Award is a profound honor. Lou is a legendary figure in both college hockey and the NHL, known for his remarkable influence on the game and the countless lives he’s touched.”

McPhee's journey in hockey began as a forward at Bowling Green State University, where he clinched the Hobey Baker Award in 1982. His NHL career spanned seven years with the New York Rangers and New Jersey Devils. Transitioning into management, McPhee found success with the Vancouver Canucks, Washington Capitals, and New York Islanders before landing in Vegas.

On July 13, 2016, McPhee was named the first General Manager and President of Hockey Operations for the Golden Knights. His strategic brilliance earned him the NHL General Manager of the Year Award in 2018, following the team’s remarkable inaugural season.

Although he stepped down as General Manager on September 1, 2019, passing the baton to Kelly McCrimmon, McPhee continued to serve as President of Hockey Operations. His leadership culminated in the Golden Knights’ first Stanley Cup victory in 2023.

AHCA Executive Director Forrest Karr praised McPhee, stating, “George is highly respected across the hockey world, consistently making a positive impact. His significant contributions to the sport make him a perfect recipient of the Lou Lamoriello Award. We’re excited to honor him during Frozen Four weekend.”
