Golden Knights Keep Finding Answers In Tight Games

The Golden Knights rally late to clip the Red Wings, showcasing their resilience and early-season strength on the road.

The Golden Knights left Little Caesars Arena with another road win in hand, edging the Detroit Red Wings 2-1 on Thursday to move to 2-0-1 through the first three games of their road trip.

Detroit struck first after a quiet opening 40 minutes. Anton Johansson finished off a loose puck from the end boards to put the Red Wings ahead, but Vegas answered quickly. Just 2:18 later, Victor Olofsson picked up a point in his return from injury, slipping a tight pass to Braeden Bowman, who used the Detroit defenseman as a screen and snapped the puck past Daniil Tarasov to even things at 1-1.

The game stayed locked there until late in the third, when Trevor Connelly delivered again. With 1:42 left, he worked a toe-drag move around the defender and beat Tarasov with a hard, low shot for the winner, giving Vegas the 2-1 finish.

Connelly’s goal was his third straight game with a score on this road trip, and it also tied him for the rookie goal-scoring lead with seven. Olofsson’s assist came in his first game back since Oct. 6, while Tomas Hertl added another helper and now has four points over his last three games.

Carter Hart was sharp behind the result, stopping 25 of 26 shots for a .962 save percentage.

Vegas also came out firing early. Its 13 shots in the first period were the most the team has posted in the opening 20 minutes since opening night, when it had 14. Even so, Thursday marked the first time the Golden Knights had gone scoreless through the first two periods since March 2025.

The road trip wraps up Sunday against the Buffalo Sabres at KeyBank Arena at 12:30 p.m. PT.

Golden Knights May Be Underselling Trevor Connelly Right Now

Trevor Connelly has already given the Golden Knights a useful glimpse of what he can do, and the early returns have been hard to ignore. The rookie has shown enough finishing touch and versatility to fit in a few different spots, and his recent run alongside Tomas Hertl and Victor Olofsson has only added to the sense that Vegas has a player who can handle more than sheltered minutes.

The bigger question now is how aggressively the Golden Knights want to push him. With the way he has produced and the style he brings, there is a growing case for a more prominent role, and that naturally leads to talk about whether he belongs with Jack Eichel and Mark Stone. For a team that always seems to be balancing present results with long-term upside, Connelly is becoming one of the more interesting lineup decisions on the board. [Read more 🡒]
