The Vegas Golden Knights locked in their captain for the long haul on September 12, signing Mark Stone to a two-year contract extension that runs through the 2028-29 season and carries an average annual value of $9 million.
Stone has become one of the defining players in franchise history since arriving from the Ottawa Senators on Feb. 25, 2019, and the numbers back that up. In 400 regular-season games with Vegas, the 34-year-old winger has piled up 396 points, with 136 goals and 260 assists, while posting a plus-112 rating. All three marks sit first among Golden Knights skaters.
He’s also set the standard in a few other categories since landing in Vegas. Stone leads the club in power-play goals with 37, power-play points with 118, game-winning goals with 27 and takeaways with 401. That takeaway total doesn’t just top the Golden Knights - it puts him first among all NHL skaters in takeaways per game at 1.00.
Last season, Stone matched a career high with 73 points in 60 games, scoring 28 goals and adding 45 assists. His 1.22 points per game were the best of his 14-year career and ranked 11th in the NHL. He also put together a seven-game goal streak, the longest of his career and tied for the longest in team history.
The recognition has followed him, too. Stone has been a Selke Trophy finalist twice with Vegas, earning nods in 2019 and 2021 for the award given to the NHL forward who best excels in the defensive aspects of the game.
His postseason résumé is just as loaded. Stone has played in 102 playoff games for Vegas and stands as the franchise leader in postseason goals with 43 and points with 84.
During the Golden Knights’ Stanley Cup run in 2023, he appeared in all 22 games, finished third on the team with 24 playoff points, and delivered a hat trick in the 9-3 Game 5 win over the Florida Panthers that clinched the franchise’s first championship. That made him the third player ever to score a hat trick in a Stanley Cup-clinching game and the first since 1922 in NHL history.
Stone’s international track record added another layer this year. The Winnipeg native skated in all six games for Canada at the Winter Olympics in February and helped his country win a silver medal with four points.
He also played in all four games at the 2025 4 Nations Face-Off, where Canada won the event and Stone scored against Sweden in the opener. Before that, he represented Canada at the 2019 IIHF World Championship, where he was named tournament MVP, and at the 2016 IIHF World Championship, where he won gold.
Stone was named the first captain in franchise history on Jan. 13, 2021.
Before Vegas, he spent parts of seven seasons with Ottawa, appearing in 366 games and recording 123 goals and 188 assists for 311 points. The Senators selected him in the sixth round, 178th overall, of the 2010 NHL Draft.
