Ole Miss is treating Vanderbilt like a moving target.
That much was obvious from the way Pete Golding broke down the Commodores’ quarterback situation, because the Rebels’ defensive coordinator clearly isn’t preparing for just one look. He spent time on Jared Curtis, studied Blaze Berlowitz, and even tracked Vanderbilt offensive coordinator Tim Beck back to his head-coaching days at Pittsburgh State in the 2010s.
Golding’s message was simple: Ole Miss can’t afford to get caught guessing.
Curtis, the five-star freshman, missed Vanderbilt’s 38-14 loss at Georgia and was announced Tuesday by Clark Lea as day-to-day with a knee bruise. On Wednesday, Curtis was listed as probable on the player availability report. Golding made it clear that Ole Miss has done its homework on both quarterbacks, and he didn’t hide his respect for Curtis.
“I mean it’s almost like two different offenses to be honest with you. Obviously Curtis is super talented.
Has a big body, really live arm. I think he does a good job at his age of taking what people give him.
From a scramble standpoint, once you kind of get those feet moving a little bit it’s kind of scary as well when he moves the pocket,” Golding said.
Berlowitz brings a different flavor entirely. He has started three games this season and helped Vanderbilt stay within striking distance of Georgia for the first half. Golding said the offense changes noticeably when Berlowitz is the quarterback, leaning into a more option-heavy approach.
“When one’s [Berlowitz] in the game, you can feel the New Mexico of the reason why he came with the coordinator. It feels much more option generated,” Golding said of Vanderbilt’s offense when Berlowitz is playing quarterback. “They do a really good job formationally, very similar to Florida with multiple personnel grouping, shift motion.”
Golding’s preparation goes beyond a simple either-or plan. He expects to see both quarterbacks Saturday, and he’s building Ole Miss’s defense around that possibility.
That could mean Vanderbilt rotates them in and out, or it could mean Berlowitz shows up in another role entirely. He played two snaps at wide receiver against Auburn, and Lea did not rule out that possibility again.
“Got to work on them both of them all week. I think we’ll see both of them in the game.
No doubt. Probably see them both in the game at the same time, too, so we’ve got to do a good job and have plans for all three,” Golding said.
If Curtis is indeed the starter, Vanderbilt may not need to bounce between quarterbacks much once the game gets going. But that still leaves open the chance that Berlowitz lines up out wide while Curtis is under center, which is enough to keep Ole Miss on alert.
The stakes are clear for Vanderbilt. A win would give the Commodores a major boost in their push toward bowl eligibility. A loss would drop them to three straight defeats and leave them needing three more wins the rest of the way.

Vanderbilt's Upset Hopes May Hinge On One Critical Injury Decision
Clark Leas latest injury update gave Vanderbilt a clearer picture heading into its matchup with Ole Miss, and the most important news was on the quarterback front. Jared Curtis is probable to play, which steadies the outlook for an offense that will need every available piece against a formidable opponent, especially with bad weather in the forecast for Saturday.
The bigger concern sits along the offensive line, where Mitchell Smith is doubtful because of a knee injury. Vanderbilt has also been getting ready for the rain expected during the game, a detail that could matter just as much as health if the conditions turn sloppy and turn every snap into a little less predictable. Vanderbilt Gets A Massive Jared Curtis Boost For Ole Miss
Jared Curtis is on track to give Vanderbilt a major lift at quarterback heading into a daunting home date with No. 9 Ole Miss. The five-star freshman has flashed plenty through his first four games, and his return would give the Commodores a different level of upside on offense after veteran Blaze Berlowitz handled the job in Curtis' absence.
Curtis is expected to be back in the lineup after missing last week, a development that matters even more given the opponent and the setting. Vanderbilt will need every bit of his playmaking against a Rebels defense that has struggled, and the Commodores are clearly better equipped to test it with their most talented quarterback available. Vanderbilt Has A Real Shot At Ole Miss If One Thing Changes
Vanderbilt heads into its matchup with No. 9 Ole Miss knowing the odds are steep, but not treating the game like a lost cause. The Commodores have spent plenty of time this season dealing with the kind of self-inflicted mistakes that can bury an underdog before the fourth quarter, and that makes this trip even more about discipline, ball security and finding a way to stay on schedule against one of the SECs more dangerous offenses.
Still, there is a real reason for optimism if Vanderbilt can clean things up in the right places. Ole Miss has shown some vulnerability on defense, and the Commodores believe there is a path to stress that side of the ball while keeping the Rebels from ripping off the explosive scoring drives that can change everything in a hurry. The question is whether Vanderbilt can make enough of those small gains add up before Ole Misss firepower takes control. [Read more 🡒]
