Tumbler Ridge is still reeling from the tragic events of February 10, when a mass shooting claimed the lives of eight individuals, including five students. Among the victims was Ezekiel Schofield, a 13-year-old player for the local Raptors’ U-15 hockey team.
Meanwhile, Maya Gebala, a member of the U-13 team, continues to fight for her life at B.C. Children’s Hospital after sustaining severe injuries.
In the midst of this heartbreak, the community has found a glimmer of hope. Tumbler Ridge has been named a finalist for a significant hockey event, a first for the town despite previous nominations. Dennis Campbell, president of the Tumbler Ridge Minor Hockey Association, expressed the importance of this recognition during such a challenging time.
“With everything our town is enduring, this is monumental for us,” Campbell shared after the provincial win. “It helps ease the pain a bit and lifts our spirits.”
The anticipation of Hockeyville has brought some much-needed joy to the community, especially among the young hockey players. “The kids are smiling again,” Campbell noted. “They’re all hoping for a chance to see Edmonton and Vancouver play here - that would truly be a dream come true.”
