Jack Rathbone is back on the waiver wire, and this time the former Vancouver Canucks defenseman is available to every team in the league.
According to Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, the Buffalo Sabres placed Rathbone on waivers on November 6, 2026. Rathbone has been out all season because of injury, but this move opens the door for him to return to game action.

If another club wants to add some blue-line help, Rathbone could be an option worth claiming. If he clears, Buffalo will be able to send him to its AHL affiliate, the Rochester Americans.
Rathbone’s path to this point started with Vancouver, which picked him in the fourth round of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, 95th overall. He built plenty of buzz as a prospect after a strong run at Harvard University, where he put up 14 goals and 53 points in 61 games over two seasons. His best college stretch came in 2019-20, when he collected 31 points in 28 games.
He also turned heads in the AHL with the Abbotsford Canucks, especially in 2021-22. That season, he scored 10 goals and finished with 40 points in 39 games.
The NHL side of the story never quite matched the minor-league production. Rathbone never established himself as a regular in Vancouver’s lineup, appearing in just 28 NHL games with the Canucks from 2020-21 through 2022-23. He finished that stretch with two goals, five points, and a minus-5 rating.
His time with the Canucks ended in October 2023, when he was traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins. Since then, he has spent time in both the Penguins and Sabres organizations, but he has not played an NHL game since leaving Vancouver.

Canucks Keep Spiraling But One Young Forward Is Giving Fans Hope
The Canucks are still searching for answers after a rough opening stretch that has left them buried in the standings and short on confidence. A 6-2 loss to the Winnipeg Jets only added to the frustration, with the penalty kill again exposed and defensive breakdowns showing how far the group still has to go to steady itself.
Amid all that turbulence, Liam Ohgren has become one of the few bright spots worth tracking. After spending time as a healthy scratch earlier in the season, the young forward has started to find his footing and has given the lineup a bit of life with a recent scoring surge, offering at least one reason for fans to keep watching even as the losses pile up. Kings Top-Six Need Could Force A Massive Decision On Core Talent
The Kings are still searching for a way to add more punch to their top six, and that need has a way of reopening old trade ideas. For Vancouver, any chatter involving Elias Pettersson immediately lands in the middle of a bigger conversation about where this team is headed, especially with changes in management and the uncertainty that comes with trying to balance present needs against long-term planning.
What makes this kind of discussion so tricky is the possibility that both sides can talk themselves into the risk and out of the deal at the same time. The Canucks would have to weigh the danger of moving a cornerstone talent, while the Kings would have to decide how much they are willing to pay to solve an offensive problem that has not gone away. For now, it is only a possibility, but it is the sort of possibility that tends to linger when teams are looking for a major swing. [Read more 🡒]
Flames Should Be Watching What Happens With Dylan Larkin And Simon Edvinsson
The latest NHL rumor cycle has Detroit drawing plenty of attention, and not just from its own fans. According to TSNs Darren Dreger, the Red Wings are frustrating other teams with the way they are handling the contract situations of restricted free agent Simon Edvinsson and Dylan Larkin, with interim general manager Shawn Horcoff not moving beyond the offers already on the table. That kind of standoff tends to ripple across the league, especially when two players with real market value are involved.
For Vancouver, this is the sort of situation worth monitoring even if it is not yet producing a concrete trade. Both players have been tied to multiple teams in speculation, but no deal has materialized, and the impatience around Detroits approach could eventually force a wider conversation. Until then, the Canucks and everyone else watching from the sidelines are left waiting to see whether the Red Wings stance hardens or finally gives way. [Read more 🡒]
