Vancouver Canucks president Jim Rutherford recently stirred the NHL waters with his comments about Elias Pettersson, one of the team's top talents. While Pettersson's name wasn't directly praised, Rutherford's openness to a potential trade has caught the attention of many, especially those in the Eastern Conference.
The Detroit Red Wings are reportedly keen on making a move for Pettersson, with Bruce Garrioch of the Ottawa Citizen noting their aggressive pursuit. This isn't the first time the Red Wings and Canucks have found themselves in trade talks.
Back in 2023, they orchestrated a major deal that sent defenseman Filip Hronek to Vancouver. There was also buzz around Quinn Hughes, although Detroit didn't match Minnesota Wild's successful offer.
Recently, the Red Wings made a tempting offer for Tyler Myers, leading Vancouver to consider asking Myers to waive his no-trade clause. However, landing Pettersson would be a whole new ballgame.
The Canucks seem open to discussions, but Pettersson's hefty $11.6 million cap hit poses a challenge. While many teams would want Vancouver to retain some salary, Detroit stands out as one of the few that can absorb the full amount. With $12.78 million in projected cap space, according to PuckPedia, they lead the league in financial flexibility.
Detroit is on the hunt for a solid second-line center to complement Dylan Larkin. Their current options, including Marco Kasper and Nate Danielson, are either too young or not quite the right fit for a No. 2 center role. With a nine-year playoff drought looming over them, the Red Wings are eager to do more than just make a postseason appearance.
They certainly have the assets to make a Pettersson trade a reality. Whether it all comes together remains to be seen, but the potential for a blockbuster deal is certainly on the horizon.
