Canucks Stunned as Playoff Dreams End with Weeks Still to Play

Canucks' playoff hopes dashed as focus shifts to rebuilding and draft positioning in the season's final stretch.

The Vancouver Canucks are officially out of the playoff race after Sunday’s NHL action, marking a tough season for the team. With a record of 21-40-8, the Canucks sit at the bottom of the league standings, holding just 50 points and a .362 points percentage. Their goal differential of negative-78 and a home record of 8-23-5 highlight the struggles they've faced this year.

Despite having 13 games left in the regular season, Vancouver’s elimination was sealed after a busy Sunday in the NHL. Key results came from the Nashville Predators and Los Angeles Kings.

The Predators edged out the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 in overtime, while the Kings fell 4-3 to the Utah Mammoth, also in overtime. These outcomes ensured the Canucks’ fate, as they can no longer surpass the necessary points threshold.

Even if the Canucks were to win their remaining games, they’d only reach 76 points. But with the Predators and Kings set to play each other twice more, one of them is guaranteed to surpass that mark, confirming Vancouver's early exit.

Fans have long anticipated this outcome, and now the focus shifts to the 2026 NHL Draft. The Canucks are eyeing the top draft pick, and with a 15-point gap from the next team, they’re in a strong position for the best odds. To close that gap, Vancouver would need a remarkable finish, including a crucial matchup against the Calgary Flames.

Looking ahead, the Canucks’ schedule remains challenging. Eight of their remaining games are against Western Conference playoff contenders, with the Kings and Sharks also in the mix for a Wild Card spot. Their only remaining game against a non-playoff team is against the Flames, who are currently on a winning streak.

The Canucks could secure the best draft lottery odds by April 2 if other results fall their way. But based solely on their own performance, they need to lose six of their last 13 games in regulation to lock in last place. As the season winds down, Vancouver’s path is clear: focus on the future and the potential of a top draft pick.
