Canucks Fans Just Got A Small Abbotsford Update To Watch

Amidst a quiet practice day in Tampa, the Vancouver Canucks prepare for their clash with the Lightning, while Abbotsford boosts its defensive ranks with a new signing.

The Canucks got through a quiet practice day in Tampa Bay on Friday, with little in the way of the usual clues about line combinations, power play usage or projected scratches. Vancouver is set for a Saturday matinee against the Lightning, but this skate offered no updates on the normal pregame details fans and reporters usually hunt for.

What did come out of the day was a brief chat with Liam Öhgren, who spoke with the Canucks’ team reporter, Olivia McDonald, after the team worked out.

“I think it was a huge step forward; I thought we played a good game overall,” Öhgren said of the Canucks’ overtime loss to the Florida Panthers on Thursday night.

Öhgren also took stock of where his season stands so far.

“It’s been a little up and down. I think I started off pretty good, then struggled a little bit, but I felt like I bounced back a little bit these last couple games.

It was nice to get a goal last game and get the confidence up a little bit. But yeah, overall, okay, I’m just going to try to build on that.”

Because of the early start time on Saturday, Vancouver won’t have a morning skate, so the lineup picture and any scratches will remain under wraps until closer to puck drop.

Elsewhere in the organization, the Abbotsford Canucks added 23-year-old right-shot defenceman Andre Anania on a professional tryout contract late Friday afternoon.

According to the club, Anania is entering his third professional season and has spent most of the 2025-26 campaign with the ECHL’s Allen Americans. He tied for 13th among ECHL defencemen in assists with 36 and tied for 14th in points with 42 across 66 regular season games for Allen last season. He also appeared in one game with the Milwaukee Admirals, making his AHL debut on April 11, 2026.

Since turning pro in 2024, Anania has put up 53 points, including 10 goals and 43 assists, along with 103 penalty minutes in 117 ECHL games split between Savannah and Allen.

Anania went undrafted after spending most of his junior career with the OHL’s Sudbury Wolves.

The Abbotsford Canucks open at home Saturday night and will face the Coachella Valley Firebirds on Saturday and Sunday at Rogers Forum in Abbotsford.

Abbotsford Finally Gets Its Home Crowd As One Canucks Prospect Heats Up

After a long wait, the Abbotsford Canucks are set for their home opener at Rogers Forum, and the buzz around finally getting in front of their own crowd is impossible to miss. Head coach Ryan Papaioannou said there is real excitement in the room about playing in front of fans in Abbotsford, a milestone moment for a club that has spent the opening stretch of the season on the road.

A big part of that early success has come from Ty Mueller, who has been a steady two-way centre since turning pro and has handled a few different linemates without missing a beat. Papaioannou has liked the way Mueller has adapted to the lineup shuffles and contributed at both ends, giving Abbotsford a dependable presence as the home schedule finally begins to take shape. Canucks Just Made A Roster Bet Fans Need To Notice

Aatu Ratys path in Vancouver had already reached an inflection point before the Canucks decided to move him, with the forward clearing waivers and still unable to carve out a steady NHL role. On the surface, the deal with Toronto for Jacob Quillan and Brandon Buhr looks like a swap of young players at a similar stage of development, but it also reflects a club trying to keep its roster flexible while sorting out who really fits into the long-term picture.

More importantly, the move hints at how the Canucks want to manage their center depth and asset value as the season unfolds. By opening a spot for Filip Chytil, Vancouver is signaling that it wants room to see whether he can become a trade chip later on, which makes this more than a simple change of scenery for one player and into a small but telling roster bet. Canucks Have Finally Closed The Book On The Bo Horvat Trade

The Bo Horvat deal from January 2023 has been fully unwound from Vancouvers side, with every asset the Canucks received in that trade now back on the move. The 2023 first-round pick was already folded into the Filip Hronek deal with Detroit, while Anthony Beauvillier went on a separate journey after being dealt to Chicago and later ending up in Washington.

Aatu Rty was the last remaining piece in the picture, and his departure closed the loop on a transaction that had lingered in the background for more than a year. For the Canucks, it is a reminder of how quickly one franchise-altering trade can keep echoing through the roster, even after the original headline has long since faded. [Read more 🡒]
