If you blinked, you might have missed Marco Rossi's resurgence amidst the buzz of the Quinn Hughes blockbuster trade. While Zeev Buium and Liam Öhgren quickly showcased their NHL potential, Rossi's journey took a bit longer to ignite.
The Austrian center faced early challenges, grappling with an injury and managing just two points in his first ten games with the Canucks. But March has been a revelation.
Rossi, now 24, is leading the Canucks this month with four goals and 12 points in nine games, placing him alongside NHL luminaries like Connor McDavid and David Pastrnak in the scoring ranks. Yet, it’s not just his personal stats that are turning heads.
Perhaps Rossi's most significant contribution is revitalizing Brock Boeser's season. The 29-year-old winger, under a hefty seven-year, $50.25 million contract, started strong with nine goals and 16 points over the first 24 games. But a slump hit hard from December through February, where Boeser managed just three goals and 10 points in 28 games, struggling despite ample ice time.
Enter a healthy Rossi in March, and Boeser’s fortunes took a turn. With four goals and 10 points in nine games, Boeser is back on track, thanks in no small part to his chemistry with Rossi. Together, they’ve contributed to 13 of the Canucks' last 22 goals.
Boeser credits Rossi’s growing comfort with the team’s systems and consistent linemates for their success. Alongside Öhgren, they’ve become the Canucks’ most formidable line recently.
Head coach Adam Foote praises Boeser’s role in this newfound synergy, noting his experience and support as key factors helping Rossi and Öhgren thrive. While Öhgren hasn’t matched their scoring, his speed and aggressive forechecking are vital to the line’s dynamic.
The "BRO Line," as they’re being dubbed, shows promise for the future. Rossi and Öhgren, central to the big trade, combined with Boeser’s long-term commitment, suggest this could be more than a fleeting success.
As Rossi puts it, "It’s clicking, game by game. The chemistry is coming."
Each player brings something unique, and together, they’re crafting a line that’s more than the sum of its parts. The Canucks might just have found a winning formula.
