Utah’s first availability report of the season brought a mixed bag Wednesday, with two players ruled out and three more sitting in the questionable column ahead of Saturday’s Big 12 opener at Iowa State.
The No. 15 Utes, 3-0, meet the Cyclones, 2-1, at Jack Trice Stadium at 1:30 p.m.
MT on FOX. It will be Utah’s first road game under Morgan Scalley.
Safety Marcus Wimberly and tight end Kana’i Lopes were listed as out. Defensive tackle Karson Kaufusi, receiver and return specialist Mana Carvalho, and offensive lineman Isaiah Garcia were all tagged as questionable.
Kaufusi has been in the starting lineup for all three games and made an early impact this season, recording a sack and a career-best 1.5 tackles for loss against Idaho. He has been part of a Utah defense that has given up just 75 rushing yards per game, and if he’s unable to go, defensive coordinator Colton Swan would have to fill those interior snaps another way.
Carvalho’s situation carries special teams weight. The preseason All-Big 12 returner already has a punt return touchdown on his résumé from last season, and against Idaho he added a 23-yard catch while bringing back two punts for 33 yards.
Garcia has been used as a reserve offensive lineman and saw action against Arkansas. Wimberly played in Utah’s first two games, while Lopes has not appeared this season.
Iowa State’s report was even longer, with 23 players listed, but the names in question are the ones that could shape Saturday more than the players already ruled out. Trey Verdon, Daniel Howard and Ka’Mori Moore were all out, though none have posted much statistical production this year.
The bigger concern for the Cyclones is the group of questionable players, which includes several starters and rotation pieces: left guard Caden Maas, left tackle Jake Taylor, wide receiver Ty Claiborne, tight end Vince Benetti, safety Drew Surges and defensive end Caden Crawford.
There are also a number of defensive contributors in doubt, including cornerbacks Beni Ngoyi and Jaheim Singletary, defensive tackle Donovan Fitzmaurice, and defensive ends Malaki Ta’ase and Jack Janikowski.
The Big 12 will update the report daily and release a final version 90 minutes before kickoff.
