Utah Unveils A New Whiteout Look Fans Will Want To See

Utah football is set to showcase a striking new hand-painted helmet in their Big 12 home opener against Kansas, marking a decade of artistic tradition in their much-anticipated whiteout game.

Utah is adding a frosty twist to its whiteout this weekend.

The Utes will unveil a new hand-painted white helmet when they host Kansas at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday, Oct. 10.

Kickoff is set for 8:15 p.m. MDT on ESPN, and the look is built to match the stage: white shell, icy detail, and plenty of red popping through the design.

The helmet centers on a large red “Utah” script on both sides, but that’s only the start. Painted frost and icicles give the lettering a frozen finish, while a gray-and-white mountain scene wraps around the lower shell and carries the snowy theme toward the back.

White flecks inside the red script make it look snow-speckled, and the long icicles hanging from the wordmark and underline push the effect even further. Gray shading behind the artwork adds depth, helping the logo and ice stand out against the white base.

The mountain treatment is just as detailed. Jagged peaks and shaded ridgelines run below the script, following the shape of the helmet and continuing beneath a red interlocking U on the back. That logo also gets the winter treatment, with white speckling and a shaded outline of its own.

It’s a design that leans hard into the whiteout concept while still keeping Utah’s red identity front and center. The contrast is sharp, but the real draw is how much there is to take in once you look past the initial clean-white finish.

The unveiling also comes with a little momentum behind it. Utah is back from its bye week and set for its first Big 12 home game of the season. The Utes are 4-0 overall and 1-0 in conference play after beating Iowa State 31-17.

This whiteout helmet also extends a tradition Utah started in 2016. The program has rolled out a new hand-painted design every year since, aside from 2020, and the series has ranged from history pieces to community tributes to memorials for teammates.

The first one, in 2016, featured black helmets with a granite texture, the drum-and-feather logo and individual serial numbers. In 2017, Utah went with red helmets and painted hands making the program’s “Throw the U” gesture. The 2018 edition brought red helmets with Red-Tailed Hawk wings in a nod to Swoop, and in 2019 the Utes looked back with silver throwback helmets, interlocking U logos, grass stains and scuffs for college football’s 150th anniversary.

The tradition resumed in 2021 with USS Salt Lake City, a military appreciation design tied to the World War II heavy cruiser that debuted in a win over Oregon. In 2022, Utah honored Ty Jordan and Aaron Lowe with portraits on the 22 Forever helmets against USC.

The 2023 design celebrated the MUSS with the student section flag, the crowd and the “3rd Down Jump,” while 2024’s Mālama Lahaina paid tribute to the program’s Polynesian community and those affected by the Maui wildfires. Last season, Utah revisited the original concept with black helmets and a bigger, more detailed drum-and-feather logo for the game against Cincinnati.

Now comes 2026’s entry: Whiteout.

Morgan Scalley Opens Up About A Special Utah Road Trip Guest

Utahs first road trip of the season to Ames, Iowa, came with an unexpected guest in the travel party: Ronald A. Rasband, an apostle of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and a University of Utah alumnus. His presence caught enough attention that Morgan Scalley made a point of calling it special, and said he also spent time helping the team understand who Rasband is and why his visit mattered.

Rasband has remained a familiar figure around campus beyond this trip. He received an honorary degree from Utahs business college in 2024 and has shown up at other college sports events before, which helped make this another one of those connections between the Utes and a prominent alumnus. For a team on the road, it was a reminder that the programs reach can extend well beyond the sideline. [Read more 🡒]

Morgan Scalley Tries To Calm Utah Fears After Iowa State Lapse

Utahs win over Iowa State still had a jarring stretch in the third quarter, the kind of lull that can stick in the minds of fans even when the final margin ends up looking comfortable. Morgan Scalley and Kevin McGiven both pointed to that brief dip in execution, but they framed it as part of a game the Utes otherwise handled well, especially once they got back to making the right adjustments on offense.

Scalleys message was aimed at easing the concern that one sluggish period might say more than it should about the team. Utah left the game with a decisive victory and, more importantly, the sense that it can correct course quickly when things get messy. For a group trying to build on its early-season footing, that ability to respond may matter more than the lapse itself. [Read more 🡒]

BYU Just Got Pulled Into A New Big 12 Ranking Debate

Utahs climb to the top of the Big 12 football power rankings is the latest sign of how crowded the league has become near the top. In the KSL Sports reporters Week 6 vote, the Utes moved into No. 1 while BYU slipped to No. 2, even after the Cougars survived a close game against TCU. With both programs still sitting squarely in the leagues spotlight, the margin between them feels thinner than the rankings suggest.

The full Week 6 release also includes the complete ballots from three reporters, which is where the debate gets even more interesting. Rankings are always a snapshot, but this one reflects just how quickly the conversation can shift from week to week when Utah and BYU are both pushing for position in a Big 12 race that still has plenty of movement left.
