Utah’s 2027 class picked up another Texas defender over the weekend, and this one comes with a little built-in chemistry.
Port Arthur Memorial defensive back Brandon Richards announced his commitment to the Utes during an official visit to Salt Lake City, where Utah hosted Kansas for its whiteout game at Rice-Eccles Stadium. With that decision, Richards becomes Utah’s 21st pledge and the program’s fifth from Texas.
He also joins a teammate. Memorial safety Darrod Jacobs, who committed to Utah in June, gives the Utes a second player from the same high school and another familiar name for Morgan Scalley’s future secondary.
Richards posted, “1000% committed #RNSB https://t.co/babAd7u5cQ” on October 11, 2026.
Texas continues to be a major piece of Utah’s class construction. The state now makes up nearly a quarter of the Utes’ commitments, with Richards added to a group that already includes Jacobs, Coppell cornerback Jaden Bibbs, Brennan safety/linebacker Aiden Martin and Grand Oaks receiver Darnell Jackson Jr.
Three of those five Texas pledges are defensive backs, which says plenty about where Utah is focusing in this recruiting cycle. The state footprint is broad, too, with prospects coming from the Dallas area, San Antonio and Southeast Texas.
At 5-foot-11 and 175 pounds, Richards brings more than just another DB label. He has real track credentials, including personal bests of 10.84 seconds in the 100 meters and 21.37 in the 200, according to MileSplit. He also helped Memorial capture the Texas Class 5A state championship in the 4×400-meter relay this spring, running alongside Matthew Christian, Cam’ron Roberts and Tyson Barnes in a 3:14.69 finish that edged Texas City by half a second.
That kind of speed gives Utah a clear athletic base to work with, even if Richards still has the usual college-level transition ahead of him in coverage technique and consistency.
On the football side, Richards has played receiver at Memorial as well, and Dave Campbell’s Texas Football lists scholarship offers from TCU, North Texas, UTSA and Louisiana. He arrives in Utah with offensive experience and the plan to grow into a defender at the next level.
With Richards in the fold, Utah’s 2027 class now sits at 21 commitments. Utah leads the class with nine pledges, Texas is next with five, Arizona has four, and California, Idaho and Oklahoma each have one.

Utahs Passing Attack Just Got More Dangerous After One Breakthrough Night
Utahs offense has leaned into sharing the load this season, with quarterback Devon Dampier helping drive a two-quarterback setup that also features Byrd Ficklin. In the win over Kansas, Ficklin filled multiple roles and the Utes kept showing the kind of unselfish approach coach Morgan Scalley has praised all year, one that has made the group harder to defend as the season has worn on.
The passing game found another gear in that one, too, as receiver Ricky Johnson, the Mississippi State transfer, delivered a career night and gave Utah a new threat on the outside. His emergence mattered not just because it added explosive plays, but because it suggested the Utes may have found another reliable piece in a passing attack that already looks more dangerous when everyone is willing to share the spotlight. Utah Just Got An Important O-Line Boost Before Colorado
Utahs offensive line has been one of the quiet success stories of the season, even after losing all five starters from a year ago. That group earned a little extra recognition this week when it was named the Big 12s Beef of the Week after helping power a strong offensive showing in the win over Kansas, a sign that the Utes rebuild up front is holding up better than expected.
Now theres another encouraging sign heading into Colorado, with Isaiah Garcia back practicing after missing the last two games because of an injury. Garcia has been a key rotational piece for Utah, and his return gives the Utes a little more flexibility and depth on an offensive front that has already had to prove it can absorb change and keep moving. Colorado Has A New Defensive Star And A Bigger Utah Concern
Colorados defense has found a jolt in Lamont Lester Jr., and the numbers have arrived fast enough to make him impossible to ignore. The defensive lineman has four sacks and 15 quarterback pressures in four games, enough to lead the Big 12 in sacks even though he already missed a game because of an ankle injury. He also posted a 91.2 Pro Football Focus defensive grade and picked up Walter Camp National Defensive Player of the Week honors after his debut, a quick rise that has given Colorado a genuine game-wrecker up front.
For Utah, the bigger concern is less about the rsum than the uncertainty attached to it. Lesters availability remains in question heading into the matchup, and if he is able to suit up, the Utes will have to account for a player who has made an impact right away and done it without much runway. If he cannot go, Colorado loses one of its most disruptive pieces, but until that status is settled, it is one more thing Utah has to prepare for without knowing exactly what it will face.
