Week 10 brings one of the strongest slates of the college football season, with matchups that were circled months ago and others that suddenly carry major weight in the race for conference titles and the College Football Playoff. That includes BYU vs. Utah, a game with plenty on the line in the Big 12 picture.
For this week’s straight-up picks, the focus stays simple: who wins, not who covers.
Arizona gets the nod over TCU because the matchup lines up cleanly for the Wildcats. Arizona’s biggest issue has been stopping the run, as it sits 96th in opponent EPA per rush.
But TCU doesn’t have the ground game to make that weakness matter. The Horned Frogs rank 135th in both EPA per rush and rush success rate, and without a functioning run game, they won’t be able to exploit Arizona where it’s vulnerable.
Utah is the pick over BYU in the biggest game on the board. The Utes have been stronger on the metrics all season, checking in 10th in adjusted net EPA per play and fifth in net success rate.
BYU sits 21st and 30th in those categories. Utah has been the better team statistically, and BYU’s strong start has kept it overrated in the betting market.
Texas is another team worth backing this week. The Longhorns still have work to do offensively, but their defense remains elite, and they enter Week 10 ranked fourth nationally in adjusted net EPA per play. Missouri’s inefficient running game is a problem here, and that’s why Texas is the road favorite to trust.
LSU keeps earning confidence, and the numbers back it up. The Tigers are first in the country in net adjusted EPA per play, seventh in net yards per play, and seventh in net success rate. Alabama is solid, ranking fifth, 15th, and ninth in those same categories, but LSU has the stronger profile.
The one area where LSU can be attacked is against the run, where it ranks 54th in opponent EPA per rush. Still, Alabama hasn’t been efficient on the ground either, ranking 50th in EPA per rush. If the Crimson Tide can’t take advantage of LSU’s weakest spot, this becomes a difficult road game for them.
Tennessee is also a team that looks vulnerable in this spot because of its passing game, or lack of one. The Volunteers rank 121st in EPA per pass and 118th in pass success rate, so if the run game doesn’t carry them, they don’t have much else to lean on.
That opens the door for Kentucky, which brings a top-20 rushing attack into a matchup against a Tennessee defense that ranks 50th in opponent rush EPA. That ground-game edge makes the Wildcats the underdog to back.

Utahs Season Opener Raised A Readiness Question Fans Cant Ignore
Utahs season opener offered plenty to like and plenty to sort through, even in a win. The Utes had to lean on their interior presence for rebounding and rim protection, and Trey Campbell gave them a steady hand with the ball while also making plays at both ends. TJ Burchs defense was part of the energy that helped turn the game around, but the overall performance still came with the kind of rough edges that usually show up in November.
Turnovers and missed chances around the basket made the night harder than it needed to be, which is why the result felt more revealing than reassuring. For a team trying to establish its identity early, the comeback was a reminder of its resilience, but also a sign that the margin for error may be thin if the Utes dont clean up the details that nearly cost them against Long Beach State. Utahs Unbeaten Start Still Comes With One Huge Playoff Doubt
Utahs unbeaten start has put the Utes squarely in the national conversation, but the first College Football Playoff rankings could still leave them with work to do. ESPNs Rece Davis said the committee is likely to view Utah as one of the countrys top teams, yet the resume may not carry the same weight as some of the other unbeaten contenders because the schedule has not been as demanding.
The next few weeks should help clarify whether that perception changes. Games against BYU, Arizona, TCU and West Virginia give Utah a chance to add the kind of wins the committee tends to reward, and the stretch begins with an opponent that could say plenty about how seriously the Utes are being taken. Utah-BYU May Come Down To The Same Costly Mistake Again
Turnovers have been the hidden hinge in this rivalry lately, and the recent history between Utah and BYU makes that impossible to ignore. In game after game, one costly giveaway or takeaway has swung momentum, changed field position and helped decide outcomes, turning a hard-fought matchup into one team chasing the mistake it just made.
This week, ball security feels like more than a coaching point for Utah. The Utes have done a solid job creating takeaways this season, and BYU has been careful enough with the ball to keep itself in position, which is exactly why the next turnover could loom so large when these teams meet again.
