In a nail-biter that went down to the wire, the Runnin' Utes fell short against the UCF Knights, losing 73-71 in a game that hinged on a controversial final call. With this loss, Utah's record slips to 10-17 overall and 2-10 in conference play, while UCF improves to 19-7 and 8-6 in the Big 12.
This matchup was a classic back-and-forth affair. The Utes battled back from multiple deficits, including a nine-point gap, demonstrating resilience throughout the contest. Twice in the second half, the Knights stretched their lead to seven, only for Utah to claw back each time.
With just 55 seconds on the clock, Utah was in dire need of a three-pointer. Enter Don McHenry, who delivered under pressure, sinking a crucial shot while drawing contact.
UCF quickly answered with a three of their own. As the clock ticked down to 13 seconds, Utah once again turned to McHenry.
Fouled while attempting another three, he found himself at the line with a chance to tie the game. Calm and collected, McHenry nailed all three free throws, knotting the score at 71.
Reflecting on the moment, McHenry shared, "At that point, I'm just thinking about winning. I hit a big-time three, got a good pass, and then at the free throw line, it was about hitting those shots to keep us in it."
The game took a dramatic turn as Utah aimed to foul strategically in the final seconds. However, what was intended as an on-the-floor foul was ruled a shooting foul, sending Themus Fulks to the line to seal the game for UCF. This call also sidelined Seydou Traore for the closing moments.
Head coach Alex Jensen took responsibility for the defensive strategy, explaining, "We told the ref we're trying to foul after a dribble or two over half court. The plan was for them to take it out on the sideline with about eight seconds left."
Terrence Brown echoed the sentiment, acknowledging the miscommunication. "We were all aware of the plan to foul, but we executed too late. I should have communicated better with Seydou about the coach's instructions."
This sequence seemed to encapsulate Utah's season, marked by close games slipping away. Despite showing potential, the Utes have struggled to close out games, a point Jensen emphasized, noting the importance of seizing opportunities.
Brown spoke passionately about motivation, saying, "We practice hard every day to represent Utah. It's about self-motivation and making the most of every opportunity."
As the season winds down, Jensen expressed a desire to move beyond moral victories. "We had a lead at Cincinnati and let it slip.
I feel for our guys because these chances are rare. We need to capitalize, as we've shown we can in wins against teams like West Virginia and TCU."
Looking ahead, Utah has a brief respite before facing No. 6-ranked Iowa State at home. Tipoff is set for 7 pm MDT on February 24, with the game broadcast on FS1.
