Utah's safety coach Derrick Odum is experiencing a homecoming of sorts, returning to his alma mater for head coach Morgan Scalley's debut season. It's a journey that brings things full circle, as Odum once held a position that Scalley later filled, and now finds himself back in a familiar setting.
Odum is energized by the positive atmosphere at Utah, noting, "It's a really awesome opportunity. The energy in the building is fantastic, and I'm thrilled about the direction Morgan is taking the program. Being back at my alma mater and seeing familiar faces is truly special."
Odum has high praise for Scalley's commitment to the program, emphasizing his dedication and influence. "Morgan's push for the right culture resonates through every position group.
His leadership is refreshing, and I enjoy coming to work every day. There's a genuine feel to everything, and it's moving in the right direction," Odum shared.
Unlike some teams seeking new talent to emerge, Odum's group boasts four players with substantial playing experience. This wealth of knowledge and understanding of Utah's culture is a tremendous asset.
"I've learned a lot from these guys about how things operate and how the defense is called. As their coach, I add my own touch, but it's a hardworking group.
They're hyper-competitive in everything they do, from the weight room to the field," Odum said.
With talent like Rabbit Evans, Jackson Bennee, Nate Ritchie, and Nate Tilmon, Odum is considering innovative strategies, possibly incorporating three-safety sets. "I might need to use more guys because they deserve to play on Saturdays.
We have depth here, which is a luxury. It's exciting to have options and not worry about putting bubble wrap on players," he noted.
Odum's return to Utah is not just about rekindling old connections but also about leveraging the depth and talent within his group to push the program forward.
