Chad Bumphis Makes Emotional Utah Homecoming Decision

Chad Bumphis returns to Utah with renewed enthusiasm, citing influential relationships and a deep connection to Salt Lake City as driving forces behind his homecoming.

Utah's coaching staff is buzzing with both fresh faces and some familiar ones this season. A notable reunion is that of Morgan Scalley and Chad Bumphis, who has returned after a brief stint at Mississippi State.

Reflecting on a pivotal conversation with Scalley back in January 2023, Bumphis shared, "After the Rose Bowl, as I was cleaning out my locker, Scalley asked if I liked it here. I told him I loved it, and he said, ‘You’ll be back.’

Fast forward, I texted him, and three minutes later, he called me. He couldn't hire me directly, but he recommended me to Coach McGiven.

We had a great chat, and everything just clicked."

Even Creed Whittemore played a role in Bumphis’ return, pushing for his comeback to Utah. "Creed texted me the day they decided to leave and said he was calling Scalley to get me back. It was amazing to feel wanted and then see it happen."

Back with the team, Bumphis is thrilled to work again with Scalley, whom he calls "one of the best teachers." Scalley's approach focuses on clarity and understanding, not just for players but for the coaching staff too.

"He’s all about making sure everyone knows what we're doing, how to do it, and why. That’s coaching."

Though Mississippi is home, Salt Lake City holds a special place in Bumphis’ heart. "This place feels like home.

My wife loves it here, and our child was born here. It’s just good to be back."

Rejoining the team means reconnecting with players he previously recruited, like Daidren Zipperer and Braden Pegan, and bringing along Ricky Johnson from MSU. "Ricky’s a smart, versatile player. He’s comfortable both inside and outside, making him our Swiss Army Knife."

Despite the changes, some things remain constant. "Utah football is Utah football," Bumphis said confidently.
