Jazz Needed Frontcourt Help And Will Hardy Just Explained This Move

Utah Jazz head coach Will Hardy believes Tony Bradley's addition is a strategic move to boost the team's frontcourt depth as the season begins.

The Utah Jazz didn’t wait for the season to sneak up on them. With opening night getting close, they added Tony Bradley off waivers over the weekend, bringing back a familiar face to fill out the frontcourt.

Bradley, who was originally drafted by Utah in the first round in 2018, was recently waived by the New York Knicks to help them meet NBA roster requirements. The Jazz moved quickly, claiming the veteran center and making him their 15th player heading into the regular season.

On Sunday, head coach Will Hardy laid out exactly why Utah wanted Bradley in the mix. The first reason is simple: size. With Jusuf Nurkic expected to miss the first couple of weeks of the season, the Jazz needed another big body on hand.

“Some extra size. Especially with [Jusuf Nurkic's] injury, having another player who brings a lot of size to the game is helpful,” Hardy said of the Tony Bradley signing on Sunday. “Tony's also a super intelligent player, so I think his feel can help us.”

Hardy also pointed to Bradley’s approach on his first day with the team.

“But today was his first day, so we're trying to get him up to speed with this group. I know he has some familiarity with Utah, but this is a different group of guys. I think he was great today, soaking up some of the information and asking questions.”

At 6-foot-10 with a 7-foot-5 wingspan, Bradley gives Utah another option in the middle without forcing the team into a major commitment. Because the Jazz inherited his contract from the Knicks through waivers, they’re able to keep him on a non-guaranteed deal to start the year.

That gives Utah some flexibility. Bradley can help cover the frontcourt until Nurkic returns, and the team can then decide whether he’s worth keeping in that 15th roster spot. He’ll be paid on a per-day basis while he’s with the Jazz, and his deal won’t become fully guaranteed unless he remains on the roster until January.

For now, Bradley is expected to provide depth behind Jaxson Hayes, who is projected to start at center until Nurkic is back, as well as third-year big man Kyle Flipowski.

Jazz Could Revisit A Familiar Scorer After His Biggest Night Against Them

Dalton Knechts name is suddenly in circulation again, and Utah is among the teams that could be watching the market closely. The Lakers have explored trade possibilities involving the rookie wing, and his situation is expected to move toward a waiver path, which could open the door for interested teams like the Jazz to take a closer look at a player who has already shown he can score at the NBA level.

For Jazz fans, the memory is easy to find. Knechts biggest game as a pro came against Utah in November 2024, when he lit up the Jazz for 37 points on 12-for-16 shooting. If he does become available, the question for Utah is not whether he can get buckets, but how his scoring and shot-making would fit with a roster still sorting out its long-term pieces. [Read more 🡒]
