The Utah Jazz are adding another guard to the mix, and this one comes with plenty of G League mileage.
According to NBA insider Chris Haynes, Utah has reached a deal with free agent guard Terrell Brown Jr., who most recently played on the Charlotte Hornets’ G League roster, the Greensboro Storm. Haynes also noted that Brown helped Greensboro win a G-League championship.
Brown’s arrival gives the Jazz one more body for a roster that is already nearly maxed out. Utah has filled its 15-man roster, all three two-way spots, and also has a training camp deal in place for Harrison Ingram. With Brown now in the fold, the Jazz are up to 20 total players heading toward the season.
That leaves Utah with one more spot to use before camp, since the team can sign three players to camp deals alongside Brown and Ingram.
Brown, 28, has spent the last four seasons in the G League, with the past three coming in Greensboro. His strongest year there came last season, when he appeared in 36 games and made 11 starts. He averaged 11.2 points on 40.1% shooting, along with 3.9 rebounds and 6.4 assists in just over 25 minutes per game.
He finished second on the Swarm in assists per game, trailing only KJ Simpson, who played just seven games for the team. Brown’s production came as Greensboro pushed toward that G League title.
Before his G League run, Brown worked his way through Shoreline, spent two years at Seattle University, and then had one season each at Arizona and Washington.
At 6-foot-3 and 175 pounds, Brown gives Utah another true guard option. That matters on a roster where Keyonte George, Darryn Peterson, Isaiah Collier, and Svi Mykhailiuk stand out most at the position, but the back end could still use more depth.
Still, making a real push for the regular-season roster will not be easy. The Jazz already have 15 players on traditional contracts, and any camp or two-way signing that wants to force its way onto the opening night group is going to need to make a loud impression before the season starts.
For now, Brown is another name to watch through camp and preseason. But if he wants to crack Utah’s opening night 15, he’s got plenty of work ahead of him.
