Georges Niang’s NBA future may not be finished just yet, and the Golden State Warriors are reportedly taking a look. According to NBA Insider Jake Fischer, Golden State has interest in the former Utah Jazz forward, a development that naturally pulls an old question back into focus: what exactly happened to Niang last year?
That question has hung over one of the strangest stretches of his career. When the Jazz brought Niang back last offseason after the Boston Celtics essentially passed him along, there was real buzz about what he could add in Utah, both on the floor and in the room. Instead, his second run with the team never even got off the ground.
Right before the season was set to begin, Niang suffered what was described as a stress fracture in his foot. The details never really went beyond that, and while the initial expectation was that he would return at some point, he never appeared in a game for the Jazz.

The best explanation remains the simplest one: he got hurt, and if he’s fully recovered, he may now have a chance to continue his career somewhere else.
The lack of updates made the whole situation feel unusual. Teams usually keep the public informed when a player is working through recovery, but that didn’t really happen here. At the time, it sounded like Niang would miss time, not the whole season, and yet that’s how it played out.
It’s a tough outcome for a player the Jazz made a point to bring back when they had the opportunity. Niang had already built one of those great underdog stories in Utah, climbing through the organization and becoming a fan favorite along the way.
If he gets another shot in the NBA this season, it will probably come on a team-friendly “prove-it” deal. That would be a different lane for Niang after landing the biggest payday of his career in 2023, but he’s been through enough in Utah to know how to turn another opportunity into something bigger. Whether that ends up being with the Warriors or somewhere else, he still has a path to rebuild his value.
