A hot mic at Sacramento Kings media day turned a routine afternoon at Golden 1 Center into a viral mess, with reporters caught making blunt, unprofessional comments about Ben Simmons and Zach LaVine.
The video, which spread on Monday, appears to capture one male reporter and two female reporters talking about Simmons in a way that quickly crossed the line. One of the first remarks heard was, “That’s what comes with being Ben Simmons,” followed by, “… Cringe, cringe.”
Sara Hodges’ name was mentioned more than once early in the clip, and she was present at media day. It is not clear whether Hodges, a sports anchor/reporter for CBS Sacramento and ABC, made any of the comments.
The discussion then turned personal. “He’s lucky he’s so fine,” one reporter said about Simmons.
The Kings signed Simmons to a one-year, $3.5 million deal in early September. The 30-year-old had spent the previous year out of the NBA and said at media day that he was excited to get back to work. He would have had no reason to know what was being said behind his back.
Another comment followed: “He’s a good-looking dude,” one reporter said. “I didn’t notice like his skin is so smooth. I was like, damn, no tattoos?”
From there, the conversation drifted to other players. The male reporter said he thought New Orleans Pelicans guard Jordan Poole was her type, which prompted another female reporter to say “lightskins” are allegedly her type. LaVine then entered the discussion.
“I think his personality annoys the s*** outta me,” a reporter said.
LaVine was traded to the Kings by the Chicago Bulls in February 2025, and the 31-year-old has been in Sacramento long enough to draw a strong reaction from at least one reporter.
“Zach’s cute, but his personality fing annoys me,” a reporter said. “He just seems like he’s hella like a p*.”
Another voice chimed in that LaVine is “hella fine,” and that same reporter called him beautiful. The male reporter then asked them to rank Kings players by “fineness.”
“Actually, I think I’d put Ben above Zach,” a reporter said. “… He’s very smooth. I was like, damn, what’s your lotion?”
The comments kept going, with one reporter saying Simmons looks much younger than LaVine, and another noting that Simmons has not been a King for a year and a half like LaVine. The implication, as the clip suggests, was that time in Sacramento is aging them.
The viral clip led to a blunt reaction online, with one post summarizing the exchange this way: “Ben Simmons is cringe, cringe, he’s lucky he’s fine…
Zach LaVine is cute but his personality f*cking annoys me. It just seems like he’s a prick.”
This is a bad look for the Kings’ media room, and the team may be able to figure out who was involved. Whether that leads to anyone being kept out of the building remains to be seen.
It’s also not the first time reporters have been caught on a hot mic. In April 2025, Raptors reporters went viral for mocking Scottie Barnes and Jonathan Mogbo.
“It’s not just [Barnes’] enunciation, which was super bad, especially last year,” a reporter said. “But even the attitude… Like he’s having fun up there. First year or even before, he just kept getting worse and worse every year.”
Then came the line about Mogbo.
“When I first interviewed Mogbo when he was drafted, I was shocked ’cause he was so dumb when they drafted him,” a reporter said.
Those reporters were later told there were live mics in the room, and they laughed. After the clip spread, Barnes posted it on his Instagram story with the caption: “Be chatting lol.”
