USC’s freshman class is already leaving fingerprints on the season, and tight end Mark Bowman has quickly become one of the names to watch.
Bowman, a former five-star recruit from Mater Dei High School, has stepped into a bigger role sooner than most expected. With Walker Lyons and Lake McRee no longer in the mix this offseason, the tight end spot has tilted toward Bowman, and through two games he’s already started to carve out a place in Lincoln Riley’s offense.
Riley pointed to Bowman’s approach as a big reason the young tight end has settled in so quickly.
“Yeah, so far he’s handled it well. I mean, he’s a smart, very conscientious kid as well, prepares.
You know, prepares hard. I think another one of the young guys, I think, takes the meetings and walkthroughs and all that very serious."
"And you see that. And he’s had to, because like you said, that’s one of the toughest positions to learn in this offense, because I know we’ve talked about it before. I mean, they do a little bit of everything,” Riley said.
“ And so, you know, for him, it’s been, I think, and I’ve talked about this a little bit before. I mean, he. He had a stronger background in blocking coming in than he did as a receiver.
"And so I think some of the fundamental things, blocking-wise, have been good. I think it’s been more about getting him in sync with what we’re doing schematically in the run game. And then there’s been a ton of development in the throw game for him,” Riley continued.
“But he’s come a long ways there. And he’s definitely got potential to be really, really good at both.
And his ability to process and us trusting him. With this much this early is pretty impressive, given obviously his age and experience level.”
That trust has shown up on the field. In USC’s first two games against San Jose State and Fresno State, Bowman caught six passes for 45 yards.
Now the Trojans turn to Louisiana on Saturday night to finish non-conference play, and Bowman will have another chance to keep growing inside an offense that has already asked a lot of him. He’s one of several freshmen from USC’s No. 1-ranked 2026 recruiting class who could matter more and more as the season goes on, especially if the Trojans are going to chase down a first College Football Playoff appearance in program history.
USC enters the game riding an 11-game home winning streak and will try to keep that run going at the Los Angeles Coliseum. The No. 14-ranked Trojans are 31.5-point favorites over the Louisiana Ragin Cajuns, according to DraftKings Sportsbook.
Kickoff is set for 8 p.m. PT, and the game will air on the Big Ten Network.
