USC's Talanoa Ili Stuns Fans with Freshman Move

Can Talanoa Ili become the defensive cornerstone USC has been searching for since their last all-conference linebacker in 2017?

When Tackett Curtis arrived at USC, there was a buzz that he could become the next standout linebacker for the Trojans. However, things didn’t pan out, and Curtis transferred after just one season.

Since Lincoln Riley took the helm, USC has leaned heavily on the transfer portal to fill gaps in their linebacker corps. Eric Gentry, despite battling injuries, often made a significant impact when he was on the field, even if he never quite reached his full potential.

The Trojans have been waiting for an all-conference linebacker since Cameron Smith's stellar 2017 season. In 2026, they're banking on Desman Stephens II to lead the charge as the starting MIKE linebacker.

Alongside him, Jadyn Walker, who logged 243 snaps last season, is expected to continue in a supporting role. Both players are returning, but USC also has some fresh talent that joined the ranks this January.

Enter Talanoa Ili, a promising addition to the Trojans' defense. Hailing from Hawai'i, Ili made his way to USC after a standout high school career. As a four-star prospect, ranked 97th overall in his class, Ili is one of four top-100 defenders among USC's impressive 35-player 2026 recruiting class.

Standing at 6-foot-3 and weighing 215 pounds, Ili showed his prowess early on. In 2022, as a freshman at Orange (Calif.)

Lutheran, he racked up 70 tackles, with 15 of those for loss, including four sacks, and forced three fumbles. His performance earned him spots on the All-Orange County Team, All-CIF Southern Section Team, and the All-Trinity League First Team.

Ili continued to impress in his sophomore year in 2023, recording 51 tackles, again with 15 for loss, and adding four sacks and two forced fumbles to his resume. His efforts were recognized with another selection to the All-CIF Southern Section Team.

By 2024, as a junior, Ili tallied 78 tackles, eight for loss, two forced fumbles, and a pass breakup. He wrapped up his high school career at Kahuku HS in Hawai'i, showcasing his versatility by playing across multiple linebacker positions and even stepping in as a large nickel and edge rusher.

With his arrival at USC, Ili brings a wealth of talent and adaptability, making him a player to watch as he begins his collegiate career. The Trojans are hopeful that his skills will translate into a dynamic presence on their defense.
