USCs 2026 Schedule Just Put Lincoln Rileys Playoff Path In Focus

The USC Trojans face an uphill battle with their daunting 2026 schedule, requiring them to overcome some of the Big Ten's elite teams to achieve a historic College Football Playoff appearance.

USC is staring at a 2026 schedule that ESPN’s Football Power Index views as one of the tougher slates in the country.

The Trojans check in with the 19th-most difficult schedule nationally, according to ESPN FPI. That also makes USC the fourth-toughest Big Ten schedule on the board, trailing only Ohio State, Michigan and Northwestern.

The full list of opponents explains why the number is so high. USC’s FPI rating is 17.0, which ranks as the fourth highest in the Big Ten, and the Trojans will be tested by a mix of lighter nonconference games and a brutal run through league play.

Here is USC’s 2026 regular-season slate, along with each opponent’s FPI rating:

Aug. 29: vs. San Jose State Spartans (-14.3)

Sept. 4: vs. Fresno State Bulldogs (-2.5)

Sept. 12: vs. Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns (-8.3)

Sept. 19: at Rutgers Scarlet Knights (-0.2)
Sept. 26: vs.

Oregon Ducks (25.3)
Oct. 3: vs.

Washington Huskies (9.9)
Oct. 10: at Penn State Nittany Lions (13.7)

Oct. 24: at Wisconsin Badgers (4.8)
Oct. 31: vs.

Ohio State Buckeyes (28.7)
Nov. 14: vs.

Indiana Hoosiers (23.1)
Nov. 21: vs.

Maryland Terrapins (1.0)
Nov. 28: at UCLA Bruins (0.5)

Two things jump out right away when you look at the schedule.

First, USC’s nonconference slate is as soft as it gets, and the biggest reason is obvious: Notre Dame is no longer on the calendar. The Trojans and Fighting Irish have played 96 times since 1926, but that rivalry game is absent in 2026. Notre Dame’s FPI rating is 25.9, and all three of USC’s nonconference opponents carry negative FPI ratings.

The other major takeaway is the Big Ten stretch waiting later in the year. Oregon, Indiana and Ohio State headline the grind, and those three are viewed as the conference’s best teams.

Each has reached the College Football Playoff in each of the past two seasons. Ohio State won the national title in 2024, and Indiana won it in 2025.

Oregon also brings a recent edge over USC. The Ducks have beaten the Trojans four straight times and seven of the last eight, including a 42-27 win in Eugene last season.

If USC is going to reach its first College Football Playoff, it will probably need to take down at least one, and maybe two, of those heavyweight Big Ten opponents depending on how the rest of the schedule plays out.

USC Is In A Battle It Cannot Afford To Lose For Local Star

Hayden Koo has become one of the more closely watched local names in USCs recruiting orbit, and for good reason. The four-star wide receiver from Tustin has drawn attention from a long list of programs that includes Michigan, Ohio State, Oregon, BYU, Stanford and UCLA, but the Trojans have made a clear push of their own as they try to keep one of Southern Californias better prospects close to home. Koo was on campus for The Opening Finals and later took part in an invite-only USC prospect camp, where he worked out with coach Chad Savage and came away with an offer.

The next stretch of the recruiting calendar could matter a lot here, because Koo is planning to take game-day visits this season even though nothing is locked in yet. USC is one of the schools he wants to see, and the late-September home date against Oregon is already on his radar, which gives the Trojans a chance to make a stronger impression in front of a local target who still has plenty of options. For USC, the appeal is obvious: keeping a top California receiver from drifting elsewhere is exactly the kind of battle it cannot afford to lose. [Read more 🡒]

USC Could Catch Wisconsin In A Coach's Most Desperate Game

Lincoln Rileys seat at USC still draws plenty of attention, but the more fragile situation in this matchup belongs to Wisconsin and Luke Fickell. The Badgers have gone through two straight down years, and after the rough 2025 season, plenty of observers expected a change. Instead, Wisconsin is trying to buy time and stability, while USC enters the game with the kind of expectation that usually comes with being the more talented team on paper.

For the Trojans, that makes this one feel less like a toss-up and more like a chance to keep a struggling opponent from finding any footing. USC is expected to handle Wisconsin, and anything short of that would raise immediate questions about where this program is headed under Riley. For Fickell, the pressure is even more immediate, because the margin for error in Madison has already shrunk to the point where every game now feels like part of a final exam. [Read more 🡒]

USC Ace Mason Edwards Just Delivered A Huge Draft Moment

Mason Edwards rise at USC ended with the kind of draft moment that confirms just how far his college career came. After missing most of the 2025 season because of injury, the former Trojans pitcher returned in 2026 and turned himself into one of the most dominant arms in the country, finishing with 8 wins, a 2.07 ERA and 15.9 strikeouts per nine innings while anchoring USCs staff.

The season also brought national recognition, with Edwards emerging as a finalist for the National Pitcher of the Year Award and earning Baseball Americas pitcher of the year honor. His performance made him the highest-drafted USC player since Brad Boxberger in 2009, and now he heads into the Athletics minor league system with the sort of momentum that can change the early shape of a pro career.
