USC Offense Faces One Mistake It Can't Afford Against Wisconsin

USC's high-powered offense meets its match in a resilient Wisconsin defense set to test their mettle in a challenging night game at Madison.

USC’s trip to Wisconsin on Saturday shapes up as a real test for the Trojans’ offense, and the reason is pretty simple: the Badgers’ defense looks like the unit most capable of controlling the game.

That was the read from Badgers Wire editor Jordon Lawrenz, who thinks Wisconsin has enough on that side of the ball to keep things tight and drag USC into the kind of low-scoring matchup the Badgers need. Asked about the matchup between the Wisconsin defense and USC’s offense, Lawrenz pointed to what happened against UCLA last week.

"Wisconsin’s defense looked incredible last week against UCLA," Lawrenz told us. "Sure, having a backup QB get the job done against you isn’t necessarily a great thing to have happen, but that was an incredibly weird game with how it was officiated.

No excuses though, the Badgers didn’t get the job done on third down. Still, they only allowed 17 points.

That’s a huge win. Mason Posa has been incredible, and then there’s always Cooper Catalano and Matthew Jung who continue to grow week in and week out."

The Bruins did have a backup quarterback, so the 17 points might not jump off the page by itself. But Wisconsin’s offense managed only seven points in that game, leaving the defense on its own for most of the night. Even so, the Badgers held up for 60 minutes and came away looking like a unit that can make life difficult for USC.

That matters because the Trojans have the talent to score, but this is not the kind of defense they can treat casually. Jayden Maiava will need to protect the ball and avoid a costly mistake that could hand Wisconsin seven points in what could be a close game. Add in the fact that this is at home and at night in Madison, and the challenge gets even steeper.

USC Defense Just Got A Boost It Desperately Needed

Elijah Newbys return gives USC a timely lift at a spot where the Trojans could use all the help they can get. The linebacker came back from a knee injury that was originally feared to be season-ending, and while his on-field production this year has been modest, his value has never been measured only in tackles or snaps.

Lincoln Riley has pointed to Newbys presence as something the team feels beyond the box score, especially on defense and special teams. For a USC group heading into the next stretch of games, getting that kind of energy and leadership back on the field matters almost as much as the physical boost, even if the full impact of his return is still unfolding. USCs Jide Abasiri Took An Unusual Path To NFL Buzz

Jide Abasiris rise has not followed the usual recruiting script. He started playing football in secret as a freshman in high school, even though his parents were initially opposed, and the route he took from there has been shaped as much by wrestling as by football. The combination helped him build the athleticism and discipline that now show up in his game, turning what began as a hidden decision into a legitimate launch point for his future.

Now a junior at USC, Abasiri has moved from an unlikely beginning to real NFL buzz, with early draft attention already circling him for 2027. For the Trojans, that kind of trajectory matters because it speaks to both his ceiling and his development, and it also adds another layer to a player whose path to prominence was anything but conventional. USC Gets A Chance To Change The Seasons Mood Against Wisconsin

Two weeks away from game action should give USC a chance to reset, and the timing could not be much better with Wisconsin coming to town. The Trojans have had extra time to rest, clean up some issues and get ready for a matchup that arrives with plenty of value beyond the usual Big Ten calendar grind.

One reason for the optimism is the expected return of tight end Mark Bowman, whose presence matters both in the run game and as a receiver. USC still has defensive concerns hanging over the season, though, and this game feels like an opportunity to show some tangible progress before the schedule starts tightening again. [Read more 🡒]
