USC Men's Volleyball Stuns Penn State in Straight Sets Victory

USC Men's Volleyball showcased dominance with a straight-set victory over Penn State, led by standout performances from both seasoned and emerging players.

In a commanding display at Galen Center, the fifth-ranked USC men's volleyball team swept No. 15 Penn State in straight sets (25-13, 25-14, 25-17). This victory marked another impressive chapter in USC's season, showcasing their offensive and defensive prowess.

Key Players and Performances

Freshman outside hitter Cooper Keane was the star of the night, notching career highs with 18.5 points and 14 kills, hitting a remarkable .545. Keane also dominated defensively, recording five blocks and contributing four digs and a service ace.

Senior outside hitter Dillon Klein was equally impressive, tallying 14 points with 12 kills and hitting .409. Klein's consistency was on display as he reached double-digit kills for the 73rd time in his career. He added five digs, two blocks, and an ace to his performance.

Sophomore outside hitter Sterling Foley added seven kills, three digs, and three blocks, while junior setter Caleb Blanchette orchestrated the offense with 28 assists and chipped in five digs.

On the defensive end, sophomore libero Johnny Dykstra led with six digs and contributed four assists. Redshirt sophomore middle blocker Wesley Smith and sophomore middle blocker Parker Tomkinson combined for eight kills and six blocks, with Tomkinson hitting a stellar .800.

For Penn State, Sean Harvey led with 12 kills, while Ryan Merk topped the match with 10 digs.

Match Breakdown

USC out-hit Penn State with a .416 hitting percentage compared to the Nittany Lions' .073. The Trojans were dominant across the board, leading in kills (41-26), assists (35-26), service aces (3-1), digs (25-22), and blocks (10.5-6.0). This marked USC's 11th match hitting over .300 and their sixth time above .400 this season.

In the opening set, USC never trailed, cruising to a 25-13 win with .500 hitting. Keane and Klein were efficient, each contributing four kills. The Trojans' defense was impenetrable, holding Penn State to .000 hitting.

The second set saw USC extend their lead with a 25-14 victory. Keane continued his offensive onslaught with five kills, while the team maintained a .333 hitting percentage. Their defense again stifled Penn State, limiting them to a .080 hitting rate.

The final set was the most competitive, featuring 10 ties and five lead changes. However, USC sealed the sweep with a 25-17 win, thanks to Keane and Klein's continued excellence. Despite Penn State's improved .167 hitting, the Trojans' .423 performance proved too much.
