USC’s recruiting board may be heating back up, and the Trojans are suddenly being linked to a quarterback who could become a major piece of their 2028 class.
After a relatively quiet summer on the trail, USC’s most recent blue-chip addition came from four-star safety Gavin Williams out of Damien High in La Verne, Calif. That had looked like the closing note for the Trojans’ 2027 class, even with reports that USC had also tried to push for four-star tackle Isaiah Bertola.
Now the attention has shifted forward.
On Aug. 10, national recruiting insider Steve Wiltfong of On3 reported that USC is in strong position with three-star Texas quarterback Trey Wright, and that the Frisco product may be ready to end his recruitment soon. Wiltfong wrote, “He was the first 2028 prospect Lincoln Riley extended a scholarship to at the position and he is clearly USC’s top target at the position.
I don’t anticipate any other quarterback offers going out in the near future. I actually think it would be a better chance to see Wright jump on the opportunity,” Wiltfong wrote in his report.
Wright’s production has already turned heads. The Lone Star High standout posted 4,062 passing yards and 5,800 combined yards, then added MaxPreps All-American honors after a big season in the Dallas area, one of the country’s deepest recruiting hotbeds.
At 5-11 and 180 pounds, he won’t check every traditional box at quarterback. But that hasn’t stopped Riley from succeeding with smaller passers before. Baker Mayfield fit that mold during Riley’s Oklahoma years, and Wright is also drawing comparisons to another Riley quarterback: Kyler Murray.
Wright’s own résumé got a boost on the day USC entered the picture. Colorado offered him on Aug. 8, and USC followed with its offer on Aug.
- He also holds offers from Oregon, UCLA, Michigan, TCU and SMU.
For USC, landing Wright would be more than just another recruiting win. It would give the Trojans an important future quarterback piece as the program looks ahead, with freshman Jonas Williams potentially lined up to follow current starter Jayden Maiava once Maiava’s eligibility runs out.
If Wright does choose USC, the Trojans could be adding a player with the kind of off-script creativity that has already invited comparisons to Murray and even Caleb Williams.

Fall camp is giving USC a first real look at the receiver rooms next chapter, and the attention has naturally shifted to the players who could help fill the void left by departures to the NFL. Among the names drawing interest are sophomore Tanook Hines, who already has college experience, and freshman Ethan Boobie Feaster, whose arrival came with the sort of recruiting buzz that follows a highly ranked prospect into August.
Both have flashed the kind of physical tools that fit what USC wants to do on offense, which is why they are already being mentioned as possible major contributors by the 2026 season. It is still early, of course, but the encouraging part for the Trojans is that the next wave at receiver does not look like a waiting project, and camp is starting to show that the transition in that group may come faster than expected. USC Heads Into Scrimmage With One Crucial Offensive Line Job Unsettled
USC is set to get a longer look at itself in a closed scrimmage at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, a useful checkpoint for Lincoln Riley as kickoff approaches. The staff is trying to sort out readiness and depth across the roster, and nowhere is that more important than up front, where the Trojans have had to keep searching for the right combination as camp rolls on.
Kaylon Miller has been among the linemen drawing attention for his progress, and the center competition has become one of the more important pieces of the preseason puzzle.
