JuJu Watkins was back in cardinal and gold, and USC wasted no time showing what that means for the Women of Troy.
No. 3 USC rolled past UNLV 100-68 Monday night in the Hall of Fame Series at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, opening the season with a statement win that featured three different 20-point scorers.
Watkins, playing her first game since tearing her anterior cruciate ligament in a second-round NCAA tournament game 588 days ago, scored 21 points on 9-of-22 shooting. Sophomore Jazzy Davidson led the Trojans with 23 points on 10-of-11 shooting, while freshman Saniyah Hall made an immediate impact in her collegiate debut with 22 points on 7-of-8 shooting.
The game was tight early, with UNLV hanging around in the opening minutes before USC put its foot down. A 7-0 run gave the Women of Troy some breathing room, and a 13-0 burst late in the first quarter pushed the lead to 14 by the end of the period. The Trojans kept building from there, stretching the margin to 17 in the second quarter before truly blowing it open after halftime.
That third quarter was the separator. USC opened the period with nine straight points and outscored the Lady Rebels 31-10 in the frame, turning a competitive opener into a runaway before the fourth quarter even started. The Trojans eventually led by as many as 42 points.
Hall was the standout rookie in a debut full of polish. She scored 11 points in each half and finished with seven rebounds, two steals and two blocks in 23 minutes. She also had two turnovers, two personal fouls and one assist, but the efficiency jumped off the page: 7 of 8 from the field, 3 of 4 from three and 5 of 7 at the line.
Maia Rosarion led UNLV with 12 points and seven rebounds off the bench.
USC’s pressure defense helped break the game open once the Trojans settled in. In the third quarter, they forced seven turnovers and shot 70 percent from the field, a stretch that made the rest of the night academic.
The Trojans also did plenty of damage inside. They scored 52 points in the paint, a big reason the offense never stalled for long.
The one area that stood out as a concern was the glass. UNLV grabbed 21 offensive rebounds and turned them into 22 second-chance points. It didn’t change the outcome Monday, but it’s the kind of issue that can get exposed later against stronger opponents.
For USC, the opener looked more like a tune-up that counted in the standings than a true test. There were still some unforced errors to clean up, but the overall performance matched the ranking.
The Women of Troy now get a few days off before hosting Utah State on Sunday. Tipoff is set for 5 p.m. PST, and the game will be televised on the Big Ten Network.

USC Lands A Fast-Rising Defender With Even More Upside Ahead
USC added another piece to its 2027 class when defensive tackle Simeon Jones Jr. of North Augusta, South Carolina, made his commitment official during a recent visit. Jones had previously been verbally pledged to James Madison, but a strong senior season and the experience in Los Angeles helped change the picture, giving the Trojans a rising interior defender with plenty of room to keep developing.
For USC, the addition fits the broader momentum around a class that now sits at 15 commitments. Jones brings the kind of upside programs covet along the defensive front, and the fact that he chose the Trojans after being tied elsewhere suggests the staff made a real impression in person. The next question is how far his game can go once he gets into USCs system. [Read more 🡒]
South Carolinas USC Test Just Got A Lot More Dangerous
JuJu Watkins return to competitive play after 588 days was already the biggest subplot for USC, but Sundays win over UNLV added another layer to the Trojans early-season picture. The guard looked like herself in the box score with 21 points as USC rolled to a 100-68 victory, and the team also got a first look at five-star freshman Saniyah Hall, whose college debut came with a burst of production right away.
Hall finished with 22 points and led USC in rebounds, giving the Trojans another high-level option to lean on as Watkins works back into rhythm after her ACL injury. Watkins missed all of her three-point attempts, which is the sort of detail that matters less in a lopsided opener than it will when the schedule tightens, especially with South Carolina looming as a much stiffer test for a team that suddenly looks deeper and more dangerous. USC Just Got An Exciting First Look At Its New Core
USCs season opener against Milwaukee offered an early glimpse of the new pieces Eric Musselman is trying to build around, and the debut went about as smoothly as the Trojans could have hoped. In a 95-63 win, Alijah Arenas, Adonis Ratliff and Darius Ratliff all played major roles, giving USC a first look at a young core with NBA bloodlines and plenty of intrigue.
Arenas led the way with 21 points, Adonis Ratliff added 25 and Darius Ratliff chipped in 14 points with five blocked shots, the kind of production that immediately changes the tone around a roster. Musselman already had prior NBA connections with Arenas and the Ratliffs, and after one game, it is easy to see why their arrival has raised expectations for what USC might become as the season unfolds.
