USC Is Tracking Another Hawaii Prospect Fans Will Want To Watch

As USC eyes its future linebacker talent at the Under Armour Next Camp, all eyes will be on Hawaii's homegrown prospect Taualii Purcell amid fierce national competition.

The Under Armour Next Camp tour is heading to Maui, Hawaii, over the Fourth of July weekend, and USC will have a key recruiting target in the mix.

That target is Tauali’i Purcell, a class of 2028 linebacker from Honolulu. Purcell is listed at 6-1 and 190 pounds, carries a three-star rating, and sits at No. 46 among linebackers in the 2028 class according to Rivals.

Greg Biggins of Rivals said USC is one of several major programs that have already offered him and will get a close look at the camp.

"National programs like Oregon, Penn State, Texas, and USC all offered and were excited to see him up close this weekend," Biggins said.

Purcell also comes from a football family. He is the younger brother of Taimane Purcell, a class of 2026 tight end who signed with California. Taimane Purcell is listed at 6-4 and 235 pounds, is a four-star recruit, and ranks as the No. 13 tight end in the 2026 class per 247Sports.

USC’s interest in Purcell fits a broader pattern. The Trojans have recruited Hawaii well before, including four-star 2026 linebacker Talanoa Ili. Ili, who is from Kahuku, Hawaii, is 6-3 and 225 pounds and is ranked by 247Sports as the No. 7 linebacker in the 2026 class and the No. 2 overall recruit in Hawaii in that class.

The Trojans still do not have a commitment in the 2028 cycle, but they are coming off a strong 2026 class that finished No. 1 in the country. Their 2027 group has slipped lately after some decommitments and other schools landing elite prospects, though Rivals currently has USC at No. 12 nationally.

That puts the Trojans fourth in the Big Ten behind Oregon, Ohio State, and Michigan. USC’s 2027 class includes 14 commitments, nine of them four- or five-star prospects, with five-star athlete Honor Fa’alave-Johnson and five-star edge rusher Mekai Brown leading the way.

Lincoln Riley is entering his fifth season as USC’s coach in 2026. He is 35-18 at USC, and the Trojans are still searching for their first College Football Playoff appearance.

This fall, USC faces a demanding Big Ten schedule that includes the league’s top three teams from last season: Oregon, Ohio State, and Indiana. The Trojans open the year at home against San Jose State on Aug. 29.

Why USC's Playoff Hopes May Hinge On One Familiar Problem

USCs path back into the College Football Playoff conversation may come down to a familiar kind of pressure: keeping its best players on the field and getting cleaner play from the quarterback spot. Jayden Maiava gives the Trojans a proven starting point after a strong season, while Elijah Paige remains a key piece of the offensive line if he can stay healthy enough to anchor the group. On the other side, Jahkeem Stewart already looks like the kind of disruptive young defender USC can build around as it tries to hold up in the Big Ten.

The stakes are obvious because the Trojans do not need just talent, they need reliability. Maiavas decision-making will shape how often USC can turn drives into points instead of mistakes, Paiges availability will affect how stable the protection looks, and Stewarts versatility gives the defense a chance to keep him on the field in different spots. If those three trends move the right way, USC has a real chance to stay in the race it wants to be in. [Read more 🡒]

USCs Smaller 2027 Class May Answer A Lingering Trojans Fear

USCs 2027 recruiting class is smaller than the kind of group that usually grabs headlines in July, but the Trojans have quietly built it around defense. With 14 commitments already in place, the class is loaded with highly regarded players on the back end and up front, giving the staff a chance to address the side of the ball that has too often been a lingering concern in recent years.

The secondary is especially eye-catching, with multiple top-100 defensive backs already aboard, while the defensive line has added another promising piece in Alifeleti Tuihalamaka. Add in legacy recruit Isaia Vandermade and a handful of linebackers from strong programs, and USC has put together a class that may not be overwhelming in volume, but is starting to look like one built to answer a familiar Trojans fear.
