USC Is Gaining Real Ground For Another Local Recruiting Win

USC strengthens its recruiting ties with the Trinity League, positioning themselves as early contenders for top running back prospect Jaion Smith.

USC has been making waves with its revamped recruiting strategy, particularly by tapping into the talent-rich Trinity League. While Mater Dei High School has been a prominent name in the 2026 and 2027 recruiting cycles, Santa Margarita Catholic is proving to be another goldmine for the Trojans, with their latest gem being three-star running back Jaion Smith.

Smith recently showcased his skills during a workout at Southern Cal on June 11, earning himself what he calls a “dream offer” from the Trojans. “I just love the city, I love being out here,” Smith expressed. Staying close to home is a big plus for him, as his family can easily make the short drive to see him play.

On3/Rivals ranks Smith as a three-star recruit, placing him at No. 606 nationally, No. 38 in his position, and No. 59 in California. Besides USC, Smith has attracted attention from several other programs, including San Diego State, Minnesota, Syracuse, Cal, and Sacramento State, according to 247Sports and On3/Rivals.

Standing at 6 feet and weighing 190 pounds, Smith embodies the perfect blend of speed and power. His ability to navigate through defenses with quick cuts and explosive speed makes him a formidable slash-and-dash back. Whether it's bursting through the middle or accelerating up the sideline, Smith knows how to turn a small opening into a big play.

But it’s not just his speed that sets him apart. Smith’s physicality allows him to break through arm tackles, often requiring more than one defender to bring him down.

His versatility extends beyond the run game, as he can also be a significant threat catching passes out of the backfield. Whether he's running swing routes, maneuvering through screens, or snagging check-downs, Smith’s dynamic play demands constant attention from defenses.

Despite USC’s strong appeal, UCLA remains in the mix, with Smith considering the Bruins a competitive option for his future.

Smith has been making an impact since his freshman year, where he logged 151 carries for 671 rushing yards, 56 receiving yards, and five touchdowns over 12 games. His sophomore year saw him elevate his game further, amassing 896 rushing yards and nine touchdowns on 190 carries, alongside 21 receptions for 167 yards, as per MaxPreps.

As Smith continues to refine his skills and expand his repertoire, his stock is poised to rise even further in the recruiting ranks.

Santa Margarita Catholic boasts a coaching staff with deep ties to USC, including head coach Carson Palmer, a former Heisman-winning quarterback, and offensive coordinator Lenny Vandermade, a former Trojan offensive lineman.

USC’s recruiting class for 2026 already includes standout players like four-star receiver Trent Mosley, four-star defensive end Simote Katoanga, and three-star cornerback Jayden Crowder. Looking ahead to 2027, they've secured a commitment from three-star defensive lineman Isaia Vandermade, adding to the growing list of Smith’s former teammates joining the Trojans.

Stay tuned for more updates as USC continues to build its future with promising talent like Jaion Smith.

Indiana Just Lost Another Experienced Arm To The Portal

USC kept adding to its pitching depth this offseason with the arrival of Anthony Gubitosi, a veteran left-hander who is moving on for his fifth collegiate season after stops at Delaware and Indiana. The portal move gives the Trojans another experienced arm to plug into a staff that has helped them reach the NCAA Tournament in each of the past two seasons, with the program still pushing to take the next step in 2027.

Gubitosis path has been a winding one, and USC is betting that the mileage matters as much as the raw numbers. He worked mostly out of Indianas bullpen last season, and his profile fits the kind of depth piece that can matter over a long spring, especially for a team trying to build enough pitching to survive the postseason grind. What SoCal Coaches Are Saying About USC Recruiting Under Chad Bowden

USCs recruiting operation has taken on a different tone under general manager Chad Bowden, and plenty of Southern California high school coaches have noticed. The shift is centered on keeping elite West Coast talent close to home, with Bowden and his staff making a clearer push to land top local players while also being more direct about what USC can offer.

Some coaches around the region see that approach as a welcome change, especially the clearer communication around NIL opportunities that used to feel murkier. Others are not fully convinced the new formula will age well, and at least one voice in the local coaching community still views USC as too old school, with skepticism that lofty recruiting rankings alone will tell the full story. USC Has A Playoff Push Riding On These Surprise Contributors

USCs 2026 outlook isnt just about the familiar names at the top of the depth chart. The Trojans are also banking on the kind of growth that usually decides whether a team can survive the grind of a playoff chase, with returning pass-catchers, a deeper defensive line and a new coordinator in Gary Patterson all creating room for players who spent last fall waiting for their chance.

Zacharyus Williams is one of the more interesting examples after transferring from Utah and losing most of 2025 to injury, while the secondary could open up quickly with injuries thinning the group and RJ Sermons waiting in line for more work. On the other side of the ball, younger defenders such as freshman lineman Boucard have already shown they can contribute, and USCs hope is that this next wave of surprise contributors can do more than just fill snaps when the season starts to test the roster.
