No. 22 USC opened the Vuori Invitational in sixth place Monday, posting a 12-over 580 through two rounds at Rancho Santa Fe Golf Club in San Diego.
The Trojans finished the day at 290-290 on the par-71, 7,003-yard layout, one of the few teams to get all 36 holes in before darkness stopped play for the final two groups. Pacific, San Diego State and Long Beach State will finish their rounds Tuesday at 8:00 a.m.
At the top of the board, No. 8 Arkansas holds the lead at even par 568, with Colorado at +4 and Oregon at +7. Only one team finished at or better than par on the day.
Jack Buchanan has USC’s best score after 36 holes, sitting tied for seventh at even par 142. The junior opened with a 69 to move into the top five, then grabbed the lead at the turn of his second round with a birdie on the par-4 No.
- The back nine, though, cost him, and he came in with a 73.
He remains the only Trojan at par or better.
Joshua Hong, back in the USC lineup for the first time this season, is tied for 23rd at 145 (+4). He followed a first-round 74 with a second-round 71, carding three birdies and three bogeys.
Freshman William Hou is tied for 33rd at 147 (+5) after rounds of 74 and 73. He battled through a rough opening stretch, bounced back with birdies on Nos. 9-10 in the first round, and was one of three Trojans to improve in round two.
Senior Nicolas Dominguez is tied for 45th at 148 (+6), while junior Jaden Dumdumaya is tied for 52nd at 149 (+9).
USC will tee off in Tuesday’s final round with an 8:00 a.m. PT shotgun start. Tee times are available through the live results link or on the men’s golf schedule page at usctrojans.com.

USCs Defense Has A Depth Problem At The Worst Time
Early in the season, USC has already seen the kind of defensive depth issues that can turn a promising year into a long one. The Trojans have gotten uneven play from backups in recent games against Michigan State and Louisiana, and the dropoff from the starters to the reserves has been hard to miss, especially in the secondary.
Brandon Riley acknowledged the problem and said the group needs more players to step up, which is a bigger concern now than it might have been in September. USC Heads Into Big Ten Play With Two Growing Problems
USC closed its non-conference schedule with a 49-30 win over Louisiana, and the night offered another reminder of how much the Trojans are leaning on young talent. Freshmen Trent Mosley, Kayden Dixon-Wyatt and Mark Bowman all turned in notable contributions, a promising sign as the offense continues to look for reliable playmakers while the schedule gets tougher.
The concern, though, is that the victory came with the same issues that can quickly become costly in league play. Penalties kept piling up and the injury situation worsened as several players left the game for various reasons, leaving USC with a few extra questions just as Big Ten competition arrives. Lincoln Riley Just Added A Defensive Name Oklahoma Fans Know Too Well
Gary Patterson is back on the sideline, and this time he is walking into a USC program that badly wants a defensive reset. After three years away from coaching since leaving TCU in 2021, Patterson had been keeping busy as a special assistant at Texas and later as a consultant at Baylor, but Lincoln Riley reached out with a bigger job in mind. Patterson, who was just elected to the Hall of Fame, has agreed to join USC as defensive coordinator, giving Riley an experienced hand with a long track record of shaping physical, disciplined defenses.
For Oklahoma fans, the name alone carries plenty of history, since Patterson spent so many years as one of the Big 12s most recognizable defensive minds. Now he is trying to help USC clean up a side of the ball that has lagged behind the offense, and the fit is intriguing because Riley is betting that a veteran voice can change the tone quickly.
