USC Faces Off With UC Santa Cruz in First Ever Matchup Sunday

In an unexpected holiday matchup, USC Men's Basketball welcomes UC Santa Cruz for a first-time showdown filled with both competitive spirit and community unity.

USC to Host UC Santa Cruz in Special Matchup at Galen Center

In a sudden but meaningful change to their non-conference schedule, USC men’s basketball will now host UC Santa Cruz this Sunday, Dec. 21, at the Galen Center. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. PT, and while the matchup itself is a first-time meeting between the two programs, the game carries added significance beyond the hardwood.

Originally slated to face Brown University, the Trojans adjusted their plans following a tragic incident on Brown’s campus. In light of that, USC head coach Eric Musselman shared heartfelt words in support of the Brown community.

“We are heartbroken by the tragedy on Brown University's campus and extend our sincere condolences to the families and the entire Brown University community,” Musselman said. “We are thinking of them and wishing them strength during this extremely difficult time.”

With Brown understandably unable to make the trip, USC quickly pivoted and found a new opponent in UC Santa Cruz. The Banana Slugs-yes, one of the most unique mascots in college sports-will step into the spotlight at Galen Center, giving both programs a chance to compete while honoring the broader spirit of resilience and community.

Musselman expressed gratitude to UC Santa Cruz for stepping in on short notice.

“We want to thank UC Santa Cruz for coming in to play us on short notice,” he said. “We're looking forward to welcoming them and their program to play at USC, and we hope our fans will join us as we come together through the game-especially at this time of year. We invite everyone to be in the building, support both teams, and share in the spirit of community and togetherness as we head into the holidays.”

For fans who had already purchased tickets to the previously scheduled game against Brown, there’s good news-all tickets will be honored for Sunday’s matchup against UC Santa Cruz. Additional information will be sent directly to ticket holders.

While this may not be the matchup originally circled on the calendar, it’s shaping up to be a meaningful afternoon of college basketball. A chance for USC to stay sharp ahead of conference play, for UC Santa Cruz to take the floor in a Power Five arena, and for everyone in attendance to come together during a time when unity matters most.
