USC Faces A Season-Shaping Test In Penn States White Out

USC and Penn State's clash in the electrifying White Out game could redefine both teams' trajectories as they each strive to solidify their identities amidst crucial lineup challenges and coaching connections.

No. 19 USC walks into Beaver Stadium on Saturday with something to prove, and Penn State is in the same boat.

Both programs are still trying to settle into who they are this season, but the Trojans have shown more of that identity than the Nittany Lions have so far. That’s part of what makes the White Out feel like such a sharp turning point for both sides.

Penn State coach Matt Campbell didn’t sugarcoat where his team stands right now.

“We lack who we want to be and where we need to be,” Campbell told reporters Tuesday.

The matchup also comes with a few built-in layers. USC and Penn State are linked by former coaches and players, including former USC and UCLA defensive coordinator D’Anton Lynn, who now runs the Penn State defense. Campbell also came close to landing the USC head coaching job in 2021.

A handful of USC players got a preview of the atmosphere during a recruiting visit to the White Out, and linebacker Ta’Mere Robinson and defensive end Zuriah Fisher both have Penn State ties.

“We’ve all seen the historical clip that goes around of the 2019 game against Michigan when they had to call the timeout on the first play,” Robinson said. “I always preached that.

And they just gotta get ready and we have to communicate a lot. Everybody’s eyes are gonna have to be right.”

USC enters at 5-1 overall and 2-1 in the Big Ten, and Lincoln Riley sounded encouraged after last week’s comeback win over Washington. The Trojans steadied themselves when it mattered, and Riley pointed to the way his team responded.

“Some of the different things that we’ve done that got them ready, they trusted it in that moment and they were ready to go,” Riley said. “I think more importantly, probably the biggest thing it shows is the brotherhood within that locker room right now. Guys are willing to fight for one another.”

Penn State’s offense has been a mixed bag under Campbell. Quarterback Rocco Becht, who followed Campbell from Iowa State, is the winningest active FBS quarterback with 29 wins and 43 starts, but the recent production hasn’t matched that résumé. He has just one touchdown over the last two games and has thrown three interceptions in that span.

Campbell said the issue goes beyond Becht alone.

“The lack of consistency around Rocco is certainly putting the spotlight on Rocco’s ability or inability at times to play with consistency,” he said, “and so I think the biggest thing is that that goes to a global approach to this.”

Penn State may also be without its top receiver, Koby Williams, who is expected to miss the game because of injury. On the ground, the Nittany Lions have split carries between James Peoples and Carson Hansen, but that part of the offense has been uneven too and has produced only two touchdowns over the last two games.

USC’s defense could have its own availability issues. Defensive tackles Jahkeem Stewart and Jide Abasiri were listed as questionable on Thursday’s injury report, and both would be meaningful pieces if they can’t go.

Still, the Trojan defense took a real step forward against Washington. After a choppy first half of the season, USC held the Huskies to 319 total yards and limited them to 1-for-12 on third down.

On the other side, Jayden Maiava was held to a season-low 245 passing yards last week, but he is still completing 68.6% of his throws. This weekend, USC may lean more heavily on the run game.

That could be a smart move against a Penn State defense that has been much better against the pass than the run. The Nittany Lions are allowing only 119.6 passing yards per game and have five interceptions. Audavion Collins leads the Big Ten with seven pass breakups, and Tony Rojas is tied for second in tackles for loss with 7.5.

“D’Anton’s a really good coach and he’s always done a really good job with the secondary,” Riley said. “Guys are sticky in coverage. He’s got some depth at some of those positions and have been able to play some different guys and they’ve been able to get some production out of some of them.”

Penn State has been vulnerable on the ground, though, giving up 173.2 rushing yards per game. That opens the door for USC backs King Miller and Waymond Jordan, who lead the Trojans with 504 and 269 rushing yards, respectively. They’ve combined for five touchdowns.

USC’s run game has already stacked up 31 carries of 10 yards or more, but it has had a tougher time breaking off the truly explosive plays of 20 yards or more. If the Trojans can hit their blocks and attack the rushing lanes with urgency, they should have a chance to create the kind of big moments they’ve been chasing.

Lincoln Riley's USC Future Comes With A Massive Catch

Lincoln Rileys long-term future at USC has come with the kind of contract language that makes any coaching discussion feel more complicated than usual. He signed a 10-year deal in 2022 worth around $110 million, and while the school clearly made a massive commitment to him, the numbers around that pact have also helped frame every conversation about where the program goes next.

The catch is the buyout, which is believed to land somewhere in the $50 million to $60 million range, even if the exact figure is not public. With Rileys record sitting at 40-19 and attendance issues hanging over the season, USC is in the familiar spot of balancing patience, expectations and the reality of how expensive a coaching change would be. Jayden Maiava Just Gave USC Fans A New Reason To Watch Saturday

Jayden Maiava has become one of the more intriguing names on USCs radar this fall, not just because of what hes doing for the Trojans, but because of what it could mean beyond college. As he moves through his final season, the NFL is already taking notice, and ESPN analyst Field Yates recently put Maiava in a conversation that should catch USC fans attention by comparing his throwing ability to former Trojan Sam Darnold.

The timing only adds to the intrigue, with USC heading into a pivotal game against Penn State that carries real weight for bowl eligibility and the postseason picture. For a team still trying to sort out where this season can go, Maiavas rise gives the Trojans another layer of stakes to watch, and another reason the next stretch matters well beyond the standings. USC Walks Into A White Out Scene Trojans Fans Will Notice

More than 200 Penn State students were already set up outside Beaver Stadium at Gate A, turning the White Out buildup into a familiar college-football scene even with the Nittany Lions coming in off a two-game skid. The student-run tent city known as Nittanyville got its campout rolling Tuesday, giving the USC trip a backdrop that says plenty about how seriously Penn State treats these nights, and how quickly the atmosphere can go from concern to full-throttle optimism.

Theres also a bigger feeling around the place under new head coach Matt Campbell, with the students talking openly about a season turnaround and hoping this game can help spark it. If Penn State takes care of business, the group plans to be part of the on-field celebrations, which is exactly the kind of detail Trojan fans should clock as they walk into one of the sports loudest road environments.
