USC Faces A Bigger Concern Than Just Beating Ohio State

Can USC overcome their recent struggles and halt Ohio State's ground game in this high-stakes clash at the Coliseum?

USC gets another chance to steady itself Saturday night when Ohio State comes to the Coliseum, with kickoff set for 4:30 p.m. Pacific time on NBC.

The Trojans are coming off an ugly loss at Wisconsin, and the timing hardly could be worse. After that setback, they head into this matchup needing a win to get the season pointed back in the right direction.

CBS Sports’ Tom Fornelli took a close look at how the game could unfold, and his read starts with Ohio State trying to make life easier on USC’s first-time starting quarterback.

“It’s not hard to figure out how Ohio State's likely to approach this game,” Fornelli wrote. “They're going to want to make life as easy as possible on a first-time starting QB, and that means they'll try to run the ball. USC's defense will likely be helpful in that aspect, because the Trojans haven't been great at stopping the run.

“The bigger problem for the Trojans, though, might be the offense. Nobody ever expects Lincoln Riley's teams to play great defense, but this offense couldn't do a damn thing against Wisconsin.

“It also struggled mightily in a win against Washington, as well as in the loss to Oregon. When it's faced a good defense, it has had trouble putting points on the board. Ohio State does not have a great pass rush, but it's still a very good defense.”

That’s the crux of the matchup: Ohio State’s defense against a USC offense that has already shown trouble against quality units, while the Trojans try to keep the Buckeyes from controlling the game on the ground.

Kalen DeBoer Just Landed In An Alabama Scenario Fans Will Hate

Lincoln Rileys tenure at USC has already brought high expectations, and the conversation around his future is never far from the surface in Los Angeles. He has yet to deliver a national championship or a College Football Playoff appearance, which keeps the pressure on and makes every major coaching rumor around the Trojans feel a little more combustible than it might elsewhere.

Kalen DeBoer has now been pulled into that picture as a reported top target if USC ever decides to make a change, which is exactly the kind of speculation Alabama fans were hoping to avoid. The complication is obvious: DeBoer recently signed a long-term contract with the Crimson Tide, so any pursuit would have to clear a major hurdle before it could become anything more than a name to watch. USC's Ohio State Stage Could Swing Two Huge Recruiting Battles

USCs Halloween matchup with Ohio State is shaping up to be more than a marquee game on the field. The Trojans are set to bring in a slate of high-profile recruiting visitors for the 2026 date, with wide receiver prospects Grant Mosley and Jayce Halasz, along with cornerback CaRon Williams, all expected in Los Angeles for the atmosphere and the chance to see how Lincoln Rileys program presents itself on a big stage.

The visit list matters because USC is already viewed as the favorite for Mosley, while Halasz remains a tougher fight with Oregon and Alabama in the mix. Mosleys profile and playing style have made him a priority, and the Trojans staff has been working to turn that interest into momentum, using the game weekend as a chance to show off both the programs upside and the kind of attention top recruits can expect in Southern California. USC Has A Bigger Problem Than Just Losing Before Ohio State

The loss at Wisconsin did more than blemish USCs record before a marquee trip to Ohio State. It exposed an offense that never found its footing, with Jayden Maiava throwing two early interceptions and the Trojans managing just seven points and 241 yards, both the lowest marks of the Lincoln Riley era. For a team that entered the week with bigger goals, the performance looked less like an off night and more like a warning sign.

Prophet Brown pointed to a deeper issue after the game, calling out the lack of complementary play and leadership within the team. That is the kind of concern that can linger longer than a single bad result, especially with Ohio State next and little margin for error left to sort out the offense, the communication, and the collective response.
