Michigan’s quarterback situation has already shifted, and Bryce Underwood’s future now looks wide open.
After Kyle Whittingham turned to Tommy Carr at halftime of the Penn State game, the signs pointed toward a change. Then, following Carr’s second start - a 28-21 win over Rutgers - Whittingham made it official, naming Carr the starter moving forward for the “foreseeable future.”
Carr completed 22-of-27 passes for 266 yards and added 54 rushing yards and a touchdown in that win, and the next month will help determine whether that decision carries beyond this season. But if Carr keeps rolling, it’s tough to picture Underwood back in a Michigan uniform next year, at least if Whittingham remains in charge.
If Underwood does hit the portal, there are a handful of landing spots that stand out.
Ole Miss is one of them. Trinidad Chambliss is moving on after this season, which leaves the Rebels in the market for a new starter.
Offensive coordinator John David Becker has already shown he can make the system work with Chambliss, and Underwood’s tools would fit there. At 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds, with elite arm talent and 4.4/4.5 speed, he brings the kind of upside that can pop in a read-option setup.
The Oklahoma tape shows what he can do as a runner, and in the right offense, he could still become a successful quarterback. Ole Miss could also land a five-star talent at a bargain.
Missouri makes plenty of sense too, especially because of Chip Lindsey. That familiarity matters.
Austin Simmons is a senior, though he has a fifth year available if he wants it, and he’s thrown 16 touchdown passes against just two interceptions this season. He hasn’t offered much as a runner, but pairing Underwood with Lindsey would be interesting.
Underwood also showed he can handle being a backup without creating issues. He may not want to sit for a year, but that route worked for Dante Moore, who was trending toward being a top-five pick before his recent injury.
A year away from the spotlight could give Underwood time to reset and sharpen the basics.
Kentucky is another SEC option that fits the profile. The Wildcats don’t have the NIL power of some of their conference peers, but Underwood has already made his money there.
At this point, the next move should be about development and the next level. He’s not on track to be a draftable quarterback right now, and Will Stein could help change that.
Stein guided Moore last season and got him talked about as the potential No. 1 overall pick. Kenny Minchey is also playing at a high level for Kentucky, with 16 touchdown passes and only one interception, and he has another year left, so Underwood might have to wait.
Still, it would be the same kind of setup that helped Moore with the same coach.
Oregon belongs in the conversation as well. The Ducks have already landed two former five-star quarterbacks through the portal, so why not a third?
Dante Moore’s time there worked, and now his future is uncertain after his season-ending injury. Dylan Raiola’s situation also matters, since it’s not clear whether he can lock down the job for next season.
If Moore leaves, Underwood and Raiola could compete for the starting role. Underwood isn’t as polished as a passer, but his running ability gives him a different edge, and Oregon’s new offensive coordinator hire will matter a lot in the pursuit of quarterbacks.
USC rounds out the list. Jayden Maiava is a redshirt senior, so he doesn’t have another year left, and there isn’t a clear heir apparent waiting behind him.
Lincoln Riley has helped quarterbacks before, including Jalen Hurts, and he has a track record with dual-threat passers. Underwood would need to learn a new system, but Riley would know how to use his skill set.
He would also be giving Underwood three years to play. It would be a bet on both sides, but it’s easy to see why that pairing would draw attention.

USC Just Got Pulled Into A Fascinating Arch Manning Debate
Jayden Maiavas decision to return to USC and skip the 2026 NFL Draft gives the Trojans some needed clarity at quarterback, and it also keeps Lincoln Rileys offense in the conversation for another season. Maiava is likely playing his final games in cardinal and gold this year, which makes the long-term picture at the position worth watching even as USC focuses on the present.
That backdrop is part of why NFL Network draft scout Daniel Jeremiahs recent Arch Manning speculation landed with so much attention. Jeremiah floated USC as a possible landing spot if Manning ever entered the transfer portal, pointing to the Trojans offensive talent and Rileys history of developing quarterbacks. Nothing is official, and there is no indication Manning is on the move, but the mere idea of USC being mentioned in that kind of debate says plenty about the programs pull. [Read more 🡒]
USCs Lone 2028 QB Commit Is Giving Lincoln Riley More Momentum
Lincoln Riley has spent the fall building around one quarterback target in the 2028 class, and Trey Wright has only strengthened that push. The Texas native has climbed to four-star status after a junior season that included 58 total touchdowns and a perfect 10-0 record for his high school team, and he has already made multiple trips to campus this fall.
For USC, the appeal goes beyond the rankings bump. Wright remains the lone quarterback commit in the 2028 class, which gives his recruitment an outsized importance as Riley continues to shape the future of the room. The visits, the production and the early commitment all point in the same direction, even if there is still plenty of time left for the story to evolve. [Read more 🡒]
USC Volleyball Finally Got The Reset Trojans Fans Needed
USC womens volleyball finally got the kind of clean reset it had been looking for, rolling past Rutgers in straight sets to snap a four-match losing streak. The Trojans looked sharper in all the areas that had been nagging them during the skid, hitting .351 as a team with 42 kills and 12 blocks while keeping Rutgers to a .133 hitting mark.
Mia Tvrdy, London Wijay and Adonia Faumuina were central to the response, giving USC the steadier, more complete performance it needed after a rough stretch. It was the sort of win that does more than just change the record for a night - it gives a team a chance to breathe, regroup and start building again with a little more confidence. [Read more 🡒]
