USC defensive tackle Jide Abasiri has been named a quarterfinalist for the Lott IMPACT Trophy, another sign of how quickly he has become one of the most important pieces on the Trojan defense.
The award, named for former NFL Hall of Famer and USC legend Ronnie Lott, goes each year to the Defensive IMPACT Player of the Year. It recognizes the player judged to have made the biggest impact on his team on and off the field. IMPACT stands for Integrity, Maturity, Performance, Academics, Community and Tenacity, the same traits Lott was known for throughout his career.
Abasiri, a junior, has already been handed captain honors and represented USC at Big Ten Media Days. His value goes beyond leadership, though. He can line up in multiple spots across the defensive front, and his presence in the middle forces offenses to account for him, opening things up for teammates around him.
Through 2026, Abasiri has posted 16 tackles, with 3.5 for loss totaling 14 yards, including one sack for minus 10 yards, along with two quarterback hurries.
Across his USC career, he has collected 49 tackles, 7.5 tackles for loss for 38 yards, 4.5 sacks for minus 34 yards, four quarterback hurries and one forced fumble.
His athletic profile has also drawn attention. In 2025, Bruce Feldman included Abasiri on his Freaks List after noting that he reached 19.22 mph at nearly 300 pounds. Feldman also reported a 1.60 10-yard split and a 700-pound squat.
Semifinalists for the Lott IMPACT Trophy will be announced in mid-November. From there, a national voter poll will determine the winner, who will be presented in Newport Beach, California on December 9 at The Pacific Club.

USC Fans Have Two Very Different Reasons To Worry About Ex-QBs
Former USC quarterbacks Caleb Williams and Sam Darnold are giving Trojan fans very different kinds of NFL anxiety right now. Williams is working back from a hamstring injury and has returned to practice, but his game status still hangs in the balance, while Darnold is back under center for the Seattle Seahawks as they try to defend their Super Bowl title.
For USC followers, the parallel is hard to ignore. Williams represents the present and future conversation, and Darnold remains a reminder of how long it can take a former Trojan quarterback to find the right NFL landing spot, even after becoming the first to start and win a Super Bowl. The Seahawks are sitting at 3-3, Darnold has already thrown seven interceptions in six games, and both storylines leave plenty for Trojans fans to keep watching. [Read more 🡒]
USC Just Earned A Real Shot At A Second-Half Run
USC left Happy Valley with the kind of win that can change the mood of a season. The Trojans beat Penn State 31-23 on the road in Week 6 of the Big Ten schedule, and Jayden Maiava played like a quarterback ready to carry momentum forward, throwing for 301 yards and three touchdowns without an interception. For a team trying to establish itself in a new conference, a road result like that matters well beyond the standings.
Lincoln Riley pointed to the value of surviving difficult road environments, and this one fit that billing from start to finish. Christian Pierce helped seal it with a key late play, the kind that can become part of a teams second-half identity if the progress keeps building. With bye weeks ahead, USC has a chance to reset, but the bigger question now is whether this win becomes the start of a run or just the best snapshot of what the Trojans can be. [Read more 🡒]
USCs Defense Delivered A Huge Win But One Concern Still Lingers
USCs 31-23 win over Penn State had the feel of a statement, and the defense deserves plenty of credit for making it happen. After a game that looked headed for a grind, the Trojans tightened up in the second half and held Penn State to just six points, smothering the rushing attack and coming through with the kinds of stops that swing a matchup in a hurry.
For a unit that has spent plenty of time under the microscope, it was a meaningful step forward and a welcome complement to the offense. Still, the film left one familiar concern hanging over the celebration: USCs pass defense remains a work in progress, and that issue will be front and center as the Trojans turn their attention to the next game.
