USC Coach Gonzales Evaluates Roster Amid New Defensive Strategies

USC's new defensive lineup, guided by experienced coaches, focuses on refining player evaluation and recruitment to build a formidable team.

USC's new defensive coaching lineup is diving deep into roster evaluations while settling into their new roles. Defensive coordinator Gary Patterson is setting the stage to elevate USC's players to championship status.

He’s reunited with safeties coach Paul Gonzales, who previously worked with Patterson during their successful tenure at TCU. Gonzales, fresh off a season at Baylor, brings a wealth of experience to the table.

Patterson's knack for player evaluation is a cornerstone of his coaching success. Gonzales shared that their primary focus has been on their own players, rather than Big Ten offenses. He outlined the key traits they prioritize in defensive backs, providing insight into their strategic approach.

"The top priority for a DB in our system is speed," Gonzales explained. "Explosiveness in tight spaces is crucial.

Football is about space and matchups. Offenses try to spread you out, and if they can, they’ll exploit the corners.

We need players who excel in short spaces and have great recovery speed. Instincts are also vital-players who understand formations, leverage, and can anticipate plays.

In the backfield, awareness of routes and positioning is essential."

Gonzales emphasized that while some traits are visible on film, intangibles require time and interaction to assess. "Players need to be adaptable, ready to make checks and adjustments on the fly. Understanding formations and having a feel for the game comes with time and familiarity."

Gonzales is optimistic about the returning safeties, noting that Christian Pierce, Kennedy Urlacher, and Alex Graham are showing promise. "They're smart, eager, and have a great mindset.

Kennedy and Alex have impressed during offseason workouts. The group is committed to improvement, and that’s exciting to be part of."

Chad Bowden’s front office has taken a lead role in recruiting, allowing head coach Lincoln Riley to focus more on coaching. However, assistants like Gonzales remain crucial in recruitment. Gonzales is hands-on, focusing on building a cohesive and complementary safety room, especially following the top-ranked 2026 class.

"When you join a new program, you assess the current roster and plan for the future," Gonzales said. "We’re looking at the '27 group, re-establishing connections, and inviting new prospects to campus. It’s a meticulous process to find the right fit both athletically and personally."

In today’s transfer portal era, player loyalty is more important than ever. "We want players who see USC as their dream school," Gonzales noted. "When they genuinely want to be here, it simplifies everything."

With Graham, Urlacher, and Pierce committed to USC, Gonzales and Patterson's blueprint for success is taking shape. As the season approaches, their evaluative focus will guide both the depth chart and recruitment strategies, setting the stage for game day strategies come fall.
