USC Builds Real Momentum Before Its Massive Showdown With UCLA

USC's relentless offense and standout performances culminated in a decisive victory against UC San Diego, setting the stage for their upcoming battle with UCLA.

No. 3 USC wasted little time shaking off last weekend’s loss to Stanford, turning a top-10 matchup with No.

10 UC San Diego into a controlled 17-? win at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon.

The Trojans had to absorb the first punch. UC San Diego opened with a powerplay goal after the teams were scoreless for the first three-plus minutes, then added a second score on a 6-on-4 chance to jump in front 2-0. USC, though, settled in quickly, and Luke Nelson helped flip the game as the Trojans answered with three straight goals to seize control.

That surge set the tone for the rest of the afternoon. After USC killed off a Tritons powerplay to start the second period, Gavin Conant buried his first goal of the day to make it 3-2.

Robert López Duart then cashed in off a UC San Diego turnover, forcing the Tritons into a timeout. Conant struck again to stretch the margin to 6-2, and after UC San Diego answered with a penalty goal, Ben Mirisch finished a powerplay to send USC into halftime up 7-3.

The third quarter was more of the same. USC spread the scoring around, with five different Trojans finding the net in the frame.

Conant and López Duart each completed hat tricks, while the Trojan defense kept UC San Diego to just one goal for the second straight quarter. By the time the teams reached the final period, USC had built a 12-4 cushion.

Nelson scored on the opening possession of the fourth, and the teams traded goals the rest of the way, but the Trojans never let the Tritons back into it. Conant and López Duart finished with three goals apiece, while Luke Nelson, Efe Naipoglu, Camden Kocur, Ante Jerkovic, Ben Mirisch, Nate Simoncelli and Taj Whitehead also got on the scoresheet.

Charles Mills anchored the effort in goal with 10 saves in three quarters. Harris and Pavoggi each added one save.

USC now turns to another marquee test, hosting crosstown rival No. 2 UCLA at the Uytengsu Aquatics Center on Saturday, Oct. 17, at 1:00 p.m. in the latest Battle of LA showdown. Before that matchup, the Trojans will honor their class of 2027 seniors: Charles Mills, Robert López Duart, Luke Nelson, Chase Landa and Zach Bettino.

USC Heads Into Penn State With One Huge Availability Problem

USCs trip to Penn State comes with more than just a tough road environment and a ranked opponent waiting on the other side. The Trojans are trying to sort through a pile of injuries that already includes season-ending surgery for receiver Terrell Anderson, while Corey Simms and Trent Mosley have also been out, leaving the passing game thinner than it would like to be this late in the season.

The uncertainty does not stop at receiver, either. Freshman tight end Mark Bowman and Mosley are listed as game-time decisions, and both the offensive line and defensive line are carrying several questionable or doubtful tags. For a team heading into one of its biggest tests of the year, the final availability report could end up shaping not just the game plan, but who USC can realistically lean on once the ball is kicked off. Houston Suddenly Faces A Road Test That Could Expose Everything

USCs defense has already become one of the seasons sharper talking points, and the early part of the 2026 schedule has done little to quiet the concern. In a year when several ranked teams have already taken hits and the playoff picture is still taking shape, the Trojans are being watched as closely for how they hold up on that side of the ball as for what their offense can generate.

The broader college football board has only added to the pressure, with coaching changes, injuries and quarterback shifts reshaping expectations across the rankings. UCLAs fast start under Bob Chesney has only sharpened the local conversation, but for USC the bigger issue remains whether the defense can steady itself before the next stretch of games starts to define what kind of team it really is. Penn State Whiteout Puts USC Under Pressure In A Pivotal Test

A primetime trip to Beaver Stadium is already one of the hardest asks in college football, and this one carries even more weight for No. 19 USC. The Trojans head into the Penn State Whiteout with their College Football Playoff hopes hanging in the balance, and oddsmakers have made them a slight underdog despite a quarterback who has been among the Big Tens most productive passers.

Jayden Maiava has thrown for the most yards and touchdowns in the conference, but USCs margin for error has narrowed with recent interceptions and injuries at wide receiver complicating the offense. The availability of several players remains uncertain, which only adds to the pressure of a road test that could shape how the Trojans are viewed the rest of the season. [Read more 🡒]
