College football is back, and Saturday comes with a compact opening-day slate that still manages to pack in plenty of attention. After nearly seven months without the sport, the 2026 season finally gets rolling, and the first kickoff comes in Dublin, Ireland, where North Carolina and TCU meet at Aviva Stadium.
That game already has plenty of noise around it, and Bill Belichick is right in the middle of it. ESPN’s Paul Finebaum took aim at the North Carolina coach before the season even started, saying via On3, “I’m not pulling for Bill Belichick.
He’s a grouch. He’s a bully, and his career in college is about to go down in flames,” and then adding, “It is mass chaos in Chapel Hill, and I don’t believe they’ll win this game in Ireland, and I don’t think Bill Belichick is going to survive until the end of the season.”
Once that early matchup is out of the way, the day rolls on with Lincoln Riley and No. 14 USC. All eyes will be on quarterback Jayden Maiava when the Trojans take the field.

The weekend is just the opening act for a bigger Week 1 stretch that follows. Next week brings Oregon against Boise State at Autzen Stadium, plus Clemson and LSU at Tiger Stadium, which will mark the start of the Lane Kiffin era in Baton Rouge.
Week 1 also includes Wisconsin against Notre Dame, Louisville against Ole Miss, and SMU against Florida State.

USC May Have Found A New Weapon Sooner Than Expected
USCs 42-26 win over San Jos State offered an early glimpse of a player who may have arrived sooner than expected. True freshman Trent Mosley caught seven passes for 118 yards in his college debut, becoming the first USC freshman since 2014 to clear 100 receiving yards in a first game and giving the Trojans another dynamic option to watch as the season unfolds.
The performance came on a day when USC was also sorting out its leadership structure, naming Tobias Raymond, Kilian OConnor, Alex VanSumeren and Jayden Maiava as permanent captains for the season. Mark Bowman has barely gotten his USC career underway, but the freshman tight end is already generating the kind of buzz that tends to follow special talent. After a quiet debut in which he had limited production, Bowman still left enough of an impression for college football analyst David Pollack to point to his potential, which is exactly the sort of early conversation Trojans fans like to hear about a young pass-catcher in their system.
The comparison gaining traction is one USC supporters will recognize quickly: Brock Bowers. The former Georgia star piled up a rare college rsum, winning two national championships and the Mackey Award twice before heading to the Las Vegas Raiders, and an SEC coach reportedly sees some of that same upside in Bowman.
