USC is headed into its first road test of the season with the kind of travel itinerary that can wear on a team before the game even starts.
The No. 12 Trojans will open Big Ten play Saturday at Rutgers, a 12:30 p.m.
PT kickoff that turns into 3:30 p.m. local time in New Jersey. It’s also USC’s longest conference trip from Southern California, and coach Lincoln Riley said Monday on Trojans Live that the team will leave earlier than usual to get settled.
"Obviously our first road trip, so we’ll head out there on Thursday. Get out there a little bit earlier with obviously the length of the travel and the kickoff time and all that," Riley said.
That extra day is meant to help USC deal with the flight and the three-hour time change. The trip from Los Angeles to New Jersey usually takes more than five hours, making it the longest in the league for the Trojans, with only Maryland coming close.
Riley also took a measured look at Rutgers, which enters at 0-2 after losses to UMass and Boston College. He pointed to the changes on both sides of the ball and noted the Scarlet Knights are bringing in a different look this season.
"Yeah, a little bit different team this year. Definitely some new faces offensively in the skill world. They brought in a new defensive coordinator, guy that’s been a head coach and that’s done a really nice job," Riley said.
Rutgers receiver KJ Duff stands out as the offensive name to know, though quarterback play has been inconsistent. The Scarlet Knights are also coming off an extended break after playing Boston College on a Friday night, a small but real advantage heading into Saturday.
Even with the travel and the awkward kickoff, USC remains a heavy favorite. FanDuel Sportsbook lists the Trojans as 23.5-point favorites, and DraftKings has USC projected to top 40 points.
The numbers line up with what USC has shown through three games. Jayden Maiava is averaging 298.7 passing yards per game, good for No. 12 in the country, while true freshman receivers Trent Mosley and Kayden Dixon-Wyatt and tight end Mark Bowman have become important parts of the offense.
There’s also a bigger picture lurking right after this one. USC’s Week 4 matchup with No.
21 Oregon is next on the schedule, setting up a game with both Big Ten and College Football Playoff implications. Oregon’s upset loss to Oklahoma State knocked some shine off that showdown, but it still sits directly in front of the Trojans.
That’s why Rutgers has some of the feel of a classic trap spot. The road trip is long, the kickoff is early, and a bigger game is waiting next week. Still, USC’s firepower is hard to ignore.

USC Heads Into Big Ten Play With Real Momentum And One Concern
USC wrapped up its nonconference slate at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum with a 49-30 win over Louisiana, a result that gave the No. 12 Trojans a little more confidence as Big Ten play arrives. The offense again had plenty to like, with freshman wide receiver Trent Mosley adding both a punt return touchdown and a receiving touchdown to keep building on a strong start to the season.
Freshman tight end Mark Bowman was another bright spot, catching six passes for 83 yards and two touchdowns before being held out of the second half as a precaution. On the other side of the ball, defensive lineman Jide Abasiri flashed enough disruption to draw a high PFF grade, but USC still heads into conference play with one lingering concern after a game that otherwise looked like another step forward.
