Jayden Maiava’s NFL stock is already getting a close look, and ESPN draft and fantasy analyst Field Yates sees a quarterback with traits that stand out when the picture is clean.
Maiava, who leads the No. 18-ranked USC Trojans, is heading into one of the biggest stages of his season on Saturday, Oct. 10, when USC travels to Beaver Stadium to face an upset-minded Penn State team. It will be his first time playing in one of college football’s loudest venues, and plenty of eyes will be on him.
Yates described Maiava as a "strike thrower" while discussing the USC quarterback with Lorenzo Reyna of USC Trojans on SI.
"He just has the sense of delivering a beautiful throwing motion. His best throws on tape are as good as any," Yates shared.
Yates then offered a comparison that will sound familiar to USC fans.
"Now this is a lazy comparison because they both went to USC and wear No. 14, but Sam Darnold is one I've enjoyed seeing throw on platform," Yates said. "Jayden and Sam don't have a ton of similarities, but that's one of them. When they have time and space, their arm talent is really, really good."
That puts Maiava in the same conversation with Darnold, the former Trojans star who became a top three NFL Draft pick and a Rose Bowl winner. Darnold also beat Penn State in that Jan. 2017 game.
Yates said he still has work to do before finishing his own big board, but Maiava is already on his radar.
He also pointed to the bigger picture around USC, where expectations remain high and the pressure never really lets up.
"USC, obviously the expectations are really high for them year in and year out after their humbling defeat earlier [against No. 13 Oregon]. This feels like a season bordering on recent years for them where it's good, but not good enough," Yates said.
There is still time for Maiava, Lincoln Riley and USC to change the story. A win over Penn State would lock up bowl eligibility, while also keeping the Trojans in the mix for the Big Ten Championship game or even the College Football Playoffs.
Maiava’s draft status remains a talking point in a class expected to be deep in April, but Yates is already leaning toward a favorable projection.
"Jayden is a good player. I think he goes in the first three rounds of the NFL Draft," Yates said.
Yates will have plenty of football to watch Saturday, including USC’s trip to Penn State. He has also partnered with Red Baron "Crunchtime" as part of the pizza brand’s "Field Access promotion, offering weekly one-on-one strategy sessions to help fantasy players prepare for a championship push through Red Baron.

Lincoln Riley's USC Future Comes With A Massive Catch
Lincoln Rileys long-term future at USC has come with the kind of contract language that makes any coaching discussion feel more complicated than usual. He signed a 10-year deal in 2022 worth around $110 million, and while the school clearly made a massive commitment to him, the numbers around that pact have also helped frame every conversation about where the program goes next.
The catch is the buyout, which is believed to land somewhere in the $50 million to $60 million range, even if the exact figure is not public. With Rileys record sitting at 40-19 and attendance issues hanging over the season, USC is in the familiar spot of balancing patience, expectations and the reality of how expensive a coaching change would be. USC Walks Into A White Out Scene Trojans Fans Will Notice
More than 200 Penn State students were already set up outside Beaver Stadium at Gate A, turning the White Out buildup into a familiar college-football scene even with the Nittany Lions coming in off a two-game skid. The student-run tent city known as Nittanyville got its campout rolling Tuesday, giving the USC trip a backdrop that says plenty about how seriously Penn State treats these nights, and how quickly the atmosphere can go from concern to full-throttle optimism.
Theres also a bigger feeling around the place under new head coach Matt Campbell, with the students talking openly about a season turnaround and hoping this game can help spark it. If Penn State takes care of business, the group plans to be part of the on-field celebrations, which is exactly the kind of detail Trojan fans should clock as they walk into one of the sports loudest road environments. Nebraskas First Test Will Reveal Plenty About This New-Look Team
College basketball fans get an early look Friday night when USC meets North Carolina in Greensboro, part of a trio of exhibition games that also includes Richmond at Virginia and Saint Louis at Nebraska. For the Trojans, it is another chance to see how Eric Musselmans group looks against high-major competition before the results start counting, with the new season still in its opening stages and plenty of roles still taking shape.
North Carolina also brings added intrigue because Michael Malone is set to coach his first game with the Tar Heels, giving the matchup a little extra weight beyond the usual preseason tune-up. For USC, the value is in the evaluation as much as the scoreboard, since these early games can expose what is already working and what still needs to be sorted out before the regular season arrives.
