Indiana Just Lost Another Experienced Arm To The Portal

The USC Trojans bolster their pitching roster with Indiana transfer Anthony Gubitosi, eyeing a deeper postseason run in 2027.

The USC Trojans baseball team is gearing up for an exciting season with a new addition to their pitching roster. Left-handed pitcher Anthony Gubitosi is joining the Trojans through the transfer portal, marking his fifth collegiate season and third school.

Gubitosi's journey began at Delaware, where he pitched for two years, before moving to the Indiana Hoosiers for the 2025 and 2026 seasons. Now, he's set to make his mark at USC, sharing his enthusiasm with a simple yet spirited post on his X account: “Let’s do it.

Fight on.”

During his time with the Hoosiers last season, Gubitosi showcased his skills over 12.2 innings, allowing six runs on 11 hits, with eight walks and an ERA of 4.26. All his appearances came from the bullpen, adding depth to his experience.

Over his four-year collegiate career, he has accumulated 87.2 innings with a 5.13 ERA. Now, he's poised to close out his college career on a high note with the Trojans in 2027.

USC baseball is on an upward trajectory. After a lengthy absence from the NCAA Tournament from 2016 to 2024, the Trojans have made it to the postseason in the past two years.

Although they've faced heartbreak in the regional championships, falling just short of the Super Regional, the team is showing promise. The 2026 season was particularly gut-wrenching, as USC found themselves on the brink of advancing after defeating North Carolina in the first game of the regional championship.

Despite leading 3-1 going into the bottom of the ninth in game three, North Carolina mounted a comeback, ending USC's season in dramatic fashion.

Despite the setback, USC's season was a success, boasting a 48-18 overall record and a 20-10 mark in the Big Ten, tying for third place with the Oregon Ducks. As they head into 2027, the Trojans are determined to break through to the Super Regional and potentially the College World Series, aiming to end a drought that stretches back to 2001.

USC's baseball legacy is rich, with 12 national championships and 21 College World Series appearances. However, their last CWS appearance was in 2001, and their last championship win came in 1998. With Gubitosi joining the fold, the Trojans are hopeful that their storied program will return to its former glory.

What SoCal Coaches Are Saying About USC Recruiting Under Chad Bowden

USCs recruiting operation has taken on a different tone under general manager Chad Bowden, and plenty of Southern California high school coaches have noticed. The shift is centered on keeping elite West Coast talent close to home, with Bowden and his staff making a clearer push to land top local players while also being more direct about what USC can offer.

Some coaches around the region see that approach as a welcome change, especially the clearer communication around NIL opportunities that used to feel murkier. Others are not fully convinced the new formula will age well, and at least one voice in the local coaching community still views USC as too old school, with skepticism that lofty recruiting rankings alone will tell the full story. USC Has A Playoff Push Riding On These Surprise Contributors

USCs 2026 outlook isnt just about the familiar names at the top of the depth chart. The Trojans are also banking on the kind of growth that usually decides whether a team can survive the grind of a playoff chase, with returning pass-catchers, a deeper defensive line and a new coordinator in Gary Patterson all creating room for players who spent last fall waiting for their chance.

Zacharyus Williams is one of the more interesting examples after transferring from Utah and losing most of 2025 to injury, while the secondary could open up quickly with injuries thinning the group and RJ Sermons waiting in line for more work. On the other side of the ball, younger defenders such as freshman lineman Boucard have already shown they can contribute, and USCs hope is that this next wave of surprise contributors can do more than just fill snaps when the season starts to test the roster.
