Lincoln Riley’s future at USC is back in the spotlight, and the timing is not doing him any favors.
The latest round of speculation picked up after Wisconsin’s 24-7 win over the Trojans on Oct. 24, a result that pushed USC to 6-2 but also knocked the team out of the rankings. With the Trojans sitting bowl eligible and still searching for the kind of breakthrough season that was supposed to come under Riley, the conversation around his tenure has grown louder again.
A big part of that chatter comes from Baylor’s opening. The Bears fired Dave Aranda after their Oct. 24 loss to Kansas, creating what some see as the most attractive Big 12 job on the board. College football insider Chris Vannini of The Athletic called Riley a “wildcard” for the position and noted that interest in a possible return to his home state has been floated before.
“The ultimate wild card. Industry sources a year ago shared whispers that Riley could be interested in this job, but it didn’t open,” Vannini wrote. "Outside talk of the West Texas native leaving USC to return to his home state has been around for a while, whether by getting fired (complete with a $60 million-plus buyout) or by leaving on his own, which USC would likely welcome."
Vannini also pointed to another Big 12 possibility.
"The TCU job could also fit Riley if the Frogs move on from Sonny Dykes," Vannini said. "Riley’s stunning move from Oklahoma to USC in 2021 makes anything feel possible.
The Trojans are 6-2 with big games coming up. How those games turn out could determine Riley’s future."
That TCU angle would bring its own twist, since former Horned Frogs coach Gary Patterson is on Riley’s staff at USC as defensive coordinator. Pete Nakos of On3 has also mentioned Riley as a possible name for Baylor.
For USC supporters, the bigger frustration is familiar. Riley was brought in to restore championship football after Pete Carroll, but the results have not matched the hype. The Trojans have reached only one New Year’s Six bowl under Riley, the Cotton Bowl loss to Tulane in the 2022 season.
Since then, USC has settled for Holiday, Las Vegas and Alamo Bowl appearances. The 17-point loss in Madison has only sharpened the criticism, especially from alums like former USC and NFL wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson.
Now the pressure is only growing. USC is probably one loss away from being knocked out of the Big Ten title race and even the 12-team College Football Playoff picture.
And the schedule is about to get a lot heavier. No. 2 Ohio State comes to the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum on Halloween, a game that could loom large over Riley’s standing in Los Angeles.

JuJu Watkins And USC Hoops Are Giving Trojans Fans Something Football Can't
While USC football was slogging through a loss to Wisconsin that included negative 17 rushing yards, the mood around campus got a much-needed lift from the Galen Center. The womens basketball teams exhibition win over UC Berkeley offered a sharper, brighter preview of what could be ahead, with Saniyah Hall, Jazzy Davidson and JuJu Watkins all drawing attention in front of a strong fan turnout.
For Trojans fans, it was the kind of contrast that stings and soothes at the same time. Football is still searching for answers after one of its roughest offensive nights in years, but the womens program is giving the fan base something different to believe in, and the early signs suggest this group can carry real momentum well into the season. Lincoln Riley Just Raised The Stakes On USCs Brutal Stretch
After a rough run and a growing sense of urgency around the program, Lincoln Riley made it clear he still sees USC moving in the right direction. The Trojans have not had the kind of recent results anyone around the program wanted, and the path to the College Football Playoff has been tougher than expected, but Riley pointed to the foundation being built under his watch, from a top recruiting class to upgraded facilities.
Jen Cohens arrival as athletic director has also given Riley another important layer of support as USC tries to steady itself through a punishing stretch on the schedule. The next run of games will tell a lot about how far the Trojans have come, because it is coming against ranked Big Ten opponents and will test both the roster and the coachs belief that the progress behind the scenes is starting to show up where it matters most. USC Has A Real Opening To Rattle Ohio State At Home
USC gets Ohio State at a moment when the matchup looks a little more vulnerable than it did a few weeks ago. The Trojans have their own blemishes after losses to Wisconsin and Oregon, but they also get the Buckeyes at home, where the crowd and the setting can matter more than the records suggest. Ohio State remains the more complete team on paper, yet this is the sort of game where a home field can shrink the gap and give USC a real shot to make things uncomfortable.
A lot hinges on how the Buckeyes handle the quarterback situation, with freshman Luke Fahey expected to start in place of Julian Sayin. Even with Ohio States strong history against unranked opponents, the Trojans have enough offensive and defensive pieces to keep this from turning into a routine visit. If USC can settle in early and turn the stadium into an edge, this has the makings of a closer game than the rankings might indicate, and perhaps even one where the outcome stays in doubt late.
