UConns Portal Haul Carries Massive Pressure Into Jason Candles First Season

As UConn enters the 2026 football season with new leadership, find out how head coach Jason Candle is strategizing the team's success with a fresh roster through the transfer portal.

UConn is heading into a new era, and the roster has been busy turning over to match it.

With Jason Candle taking over after Jim Mora’s move to Colorado State, the Huskies are trying to piece together a team capable of following back-to-back nine-win seasons and two straight Fenway Bowl trips. That’s a tall order even before you factor in the losses of starting quarterback Joe Fagnano and record-setting receiver Skyler Bell, the All-American who was drafted in the fourth round by the Buffalo Bills.

So the transfer portal became the lifeline again this offseason. And with about a month left before training camp, UConn’s 2026 additions are starting to take shape.

The list is long, and it’s loaded with familiar Candle ties from Toledo. Among the incoming names are quarterback Jake Merklinger from Tennessee and Kalieb Osborne from Toledo, along with linebacker K'Von Sherman, also from Toledo. The Huskies also brought in edge rusher Joshua Mickens from Ohio State and another Toledo edge, Chamberlain Campbell.

The portal haul stretches across every level of the roster. UConn added running backs Trey Cornist from Central Michigan, Dashaun Reeder from Northwestern, Jaden Hart from Syracuse, and Cyncir Bowers from West Virginia. At receiver, the Huskies picked up Emanuel Ross from Syracuse, Javon Brown, Ryder Treadway, Ky Wilson from Youngstown State, Zy'marion Lang, Kamren Flowers, and Jediyah Willoughby, all from Toledo except where noted, plus Cam Abshire from Oklahoma State.

The defensive backfield got its share of reinforcements too. UConn added Moussa Kane from Duke, Tracy Revels from Michigan State, Jayden Davis from Fresno State, Tyler McKinstry from Toledo, Renick Dorilas from Rutgers, and Steve Miller from USC.

Up front, the Huskies brought in Tahjae Mullix and Zakaih Saez from Oregon State, Desmond Aladuge from Duke, Christian Richter from Marshall, Nathan Pahanich from Wake Forest, Terrance Moore, Dominic Rivera, and Raphael Greene-Nyarko from Toledo. Linebacker depth also got a boost with Avery Dunn from Toledo, John Lista from Penn, Luke Murphy from Coastal Carolina, and Rickey Williams from Toledo.

There are more pieces in the mix as well: Matt Ragan from Boston College at tight end, Melvin Hills III from Texas on the edge, Anas Luqman from Ohio, and Alex Godavitarne, a D-2 transfer at tight end.

The schedule won’t give Candle much room to breathe. UConn opens Sept. 5 against Lafayette, then faces a tough slate that includes ACC opponents Syracuse and North Carolina, Big Ten member Maryland, and nonconference games against Old Dominion and James Madison, which reached the College Football Playoff in 2026.

Why The Kings Were Sold On UConn's Alex Karaban

When Sacramento Kings general manager Scott Perry introduced the teams 2026 NBA Draft class, Alex Karaban was the name that carried the clearest UConn imprint. Perry pointed to Karabans winning pedigree and the way he fits into the Kings culture and values, a combination that helped the former Husky stand out alongside Darius Acuff Jr. and Emanuel Sharp.

For UConn fans, that connection is hardly surprising. Karabans run in Storrs came under Dan Hurley, whose program is built on hard work, accountability and a standard that translates beyond college, and Perry made it clear that those traits mattered in Sacramentos evaluation. Karaban, for his part, said the lessons he learned at UConn are the kind he expects to carry with him into the next phase of his career. [Read more 🡒]

UConn Fans Will Love Alex Karabans Latest Sacramento Moment

Sacramentos summer rollout has already given Alex Karaban a little extra visibility, and for UConn fans, it was the kind of off-court moment that still feels connected to the next step in a young pro career. Karaban, the former Huskies standout now on the Kings roster, joined fellow rookies Darius Acuff and Emanuel Sharp at an Athletics game against the Dodgers in West Sacramento, where the three handled ceremonial first pitches before the baseball crowd.

The timing matters because Sacramento is in the middle of a roster crossroads, with the Kings summer calendar about to shift into the California Classic and Summer League. For Karaban, that means an early chance to make a case as the depth chart begins to settle, and his latest appearance is a small reminder that he is already being folded into the franchises broader plans.
